A lot of big hitters on that and loads of tracks I love though a lot would suffer from over-familiarity.

But, Incense and Peppers?

Well spotted never noticed that before. just checked to see if it says that on the back of my copy and it does. Nvermind, bought it second hand so it didn't cost much and I do have the original album it came from.

More music for a sunny afternoon. Some similarity to my previous ‘sunny’ posting but I never tire of hearing the music. Judy in Disguise, Sorrow - two fab tracks.

One of the first of these lovely little compact box sets I bought. Vertigo was a strange label, early vinyl swirl labels are highly desirable/collectible but they did have some very strange acts on their roster.

Anyone got all the original swirl label records, I know C. has got a few?

Played the new one from The Tangent a couple of times yesterday.

Inimitably them - nice music, stylised semi-spoken vocals, storytelling.

Always interesting and likeable but never quite hits the heights threatened for me.

Dim Gray are a young Norwegian band.

One of their members is providing keyboards for Big Big Train's upcoming tour whilst one of the new permanent members of said band is unavailable, so I had to give them a listen of course.

Very nice.

Image

A review from Velvet Thunder says the following:

Dim Gray has a unique, eclectic and ethereal deliver that is part Radiohead, Sigur Rós, No-man, Talk Talk, Porcupine Tree, Steve Hogarth and Midge Ure’s atmospheric Ultravox but also 100% Dim Gray. This is gorgeous and sublime music that could be the soundtrack to the life and the universe itself as it has a scope and depth that is beyond measure and as brilliant and thought provoking as the heavens above our head. The three members of the band paint pictures with music that is so stirring and emotional that you have to simply stop whatever you are doing and give them your full attention and then you realise that an hour has gone by that was as fleeting as a second and as fulfilling as a life time. The only word that does this album full justice is beautiful as that is exactly what it is and this may be the only album that you ever need for the rest of your life.

The CD and vinyl editions come with several bonus tracks which make what was already a spectacular package something truly special. Dim Gray should be lauded for producing such a wondrous work of art so early in their career which truly marks them out as something special and this could/should be the start of a meteoric rise to fame and, hopefully, fortune. You simply have to hear this album and you will be hooked immediately as it is a truly magical experience and so different to so much of what is currently available these days.

I mean, I do like it on 1st couple of listens but blimey....

(Definitely worth a listen.)

Another good one from Stewart and co. Possibly not quite as interesting as the first LP, but in the same ballpark. I dunno, I'm in a Canterbury phase now. Wondering if I should start a thread...

Yes Matt. You must!

A tremendous record!

From a movement bigger and better then the Mersea/Liverpool scene ;)

In for a penny...

Recorded in 1979, it was released on ECM Records 33 years later, in 2012.

The two albums that followed are both live and contain 6 of these 7 tracks. [Personal Mountains and Nude Ants]

Apparently, Sleeper was recorded better too

Of some interest:

April 1979 Tour in Japan:
Personal Mountains was released by ECM Records in 1989 and contains tracks from different concerts performed in Tokyo in April 1979. According to http://www.keithjarrett.org, that April Jarrett's "European Quartet" toured Japan performing 13 times in 20 days which also gave way to Sleeper.

Nude Ants was released by ECM Records in 1980. It was recorded during different live performances by Jarrett's 'European Quartet' at the Village Vanguard in New York City in May 1979. The title of the album is a play on the phrase "New Dance", which is the title of the penultimate song.
Five of the tracks are on Sleeper too with a couple from Personal Mountains - Nude Ants came first

Wonderful music

Their second LP and probably best pre-trilogy album, but I wouldn't know as this is the only pre-Flying Teapot disc of theirs I own. Not everything works (like most of their albums), but enough does for me to recommend it for those interested.

Great album, love all of it. What tracks don't work in your opinion?
This remaster (from original master tapes, for the first time) is highly recommended.

If you like noisy C. you might like this. Varies from heavy riff metal to glorious choral type harmonies. Really good album.

Porcupine Tree no less, 'Deadwing" - worth a listen.
