Nice - but very predictable song selection.

Somebody to Love, Fresh Garbage, Eight Miles High, Sunshine of your Love...

They are clearly aiming at a certain listener - dare I say an unadventurous one

As an initial psych comp, (it first came out many years ago, one of the first of its kind I would suggest), yes, I would probably agree although there are a few on thus comp that I didn't know. Anyway, it's nice to just put a comp on with all the stuff you know already from time to time - I never get tired of hearing this sort of thing. If I had first heard this set of songs altogether a few decades ago I would have been ecstatic.

Also it's quite rare now and reasonably expensive to get hold of, not that that matters.

It is 104F at present and will climb a few more degrees by 6 p.m. so I am drinking a Crémant D’Alsace and staying indoors. Oh, and listening to Tull’s Thick As A Brick, SW’s remix and reading the PSL of same in the classics section.

Agreed

To be honest, I don't think the band ever were as good as the sum of the parts

Excellent new (debut) album from Illuminae, formed by Ian Jones (Karnataka) with Polish singer Agnieszka Swita. The ubiquitous Steve Hackett and Craig Blundell are amongst the contributors.

Recommended.

Pretty rubbishy packaging here, would have preferred it all in a nice box rather than this compact, concertina affair.

It is, although I wish Stills would reign it in. "I've got to play loudest", " I've got to play a guitar solo in every song", "I've got to play the final chord", "I've got to sing the last note", " I need to have more of my songs in the set". You can understand why musicians got fed up working with him. Still a genius, though. ;)

Yes - good points, well made

Thoroughfare Gap was the end for me.

How can such a talent slide so far down the slippery slope...?

To be honest it was only for a few years wasn't it? Shame he was unable to maximise things with C,N&Y. Mind you with the egos and drugs at work there I guess we were lucky to get out of the four of them, or even the three of them, what we did. As with many, the whole was better than the individuals. One can only imagine what they might have achieved if they had stayed together and worked collectively towards the greater good. Sadly, all things must pass.

Not quite convinced by the 'coolest man on the planet' tag though.

In my opinion, the Decemberists have never made a bad album. The lyrics are usually genius. One of the few bands where I become genuinely excited when I hear of an impending new release. "The hazards of love" is one of the greatest prog rock albums ever made.
