Emmylou Harris - The Light Of The Stable

Until a month ago, I knew nothing about this album from 1979. I knew her albums before and after and so hearing about the existence of this - from her 'classic' period - was a shock and a delightful surprise. I was prepared to be disappointed when I *got* it but, by god, it's fucking beautiful. Absolutely delightful. The best Xmas album I've heard in 21 years.

What say you?

I picked this up for about $1 a year or so ago in a charity shop and thought it was pretty good. It seems to be fairly genuine, compared to a lot of Christmas albums which are mainly fairly contrived. I'll have to give it another listen during the festive period.
"U2 routinely spent a year in the studio...I have a theory: if you put four monkeys in the studio for a year with Lanois and Eno and Lillywhite, they would make a pretty good record, too."

My copy has this cover.

It's quite pleasant (in a sugary way), but it's no classic (and is way too short). O Little Town of Bethlehem is the standout track for me.

1. Christmas Time's A-Coming - Emmylou Harris, Logan, Tex
2. O Little Town of Bethlehem - Emmylou Harris, Brooks, Phillip
3. Away in a Manger - Emmylou Harris, Traditional
4. Angel Eyes - Emmylou Harris, Crowell, Rodney
5. The First Noel - Emmylou Harris, Sandys, William
6. Beautiful Star of Bethlehem - Emmylou Harris, Phipps, A.L.
7. Little Drummer Boy - Emmylou Harris, Davis, Katherine
8. Golden Cradle - Emmylou Harris, Traditional
9. Silent Night - Emmylou Harris, Gruber, Franz
10. Light of the Stable - Emmylou Harris, Rhymer, Elizabeth

Thesiger's cover is the newer version. I'm not one to play many Christmas albums. I know, bah humbug, grinch, etc., but really there aren't very many good ones out there. I do like this one a lot but then, I'm a big fan of Emmylou.

That's the cover of my vinyl album. Have always assumed it was the original cover. Although pretty fond of Christmas music this rarely gets an outing - there's nothing wrong with it but it's not outstanding either.

Coope Boyes & Simpson generally rule the seasonal airwaves though other choral offerings bring their festive charms.
