I would say up until 1980 at least, Bowie is very highly regarded as a lyricist.

Not to rehash old arguments (especially since they were so enjoyable the first time around) but I really do think the "Dylan is more serious/weighty" argument was only raised here in opposition to it. I know it goes on in the world at large, but I really do think the people here that prefer Dylan do so just as directly, viscerally, emotionally, etc. I know I do. I don't find Ziggy-era Bowie any more 'fun' or for that matter, any less 'serious' than the music of Dylan's peak (which I think we'd all agree is roughly '65-'67).

Although on the other hand, I am surprised the vote is so decisive. Maybe Bob has the numbers and David has the intensity of faith? I'd expect it to be closer.

I haven't voted so i can't see the result. It sounds like Dylan is winning by more than English people like.

I find it too close to call.

They are both artists I semi-collect and get a little obsessed about certain periods in their careers. I get real into some of those songs, and go through periods where I listen to them a lot. I've seen both live, liked Bowie a lot and Dylan not so much. I think they're both masters. I just don't get that enthused to explore their discographies any more completely, They're both in my top 50 but not my top 10 or 20.

Bowie the most overrated pop/rock artist ever. Just hopped on any bandwagon going. Dylan was a trendsetter Bowie a trend follower.

The notion that you can really go way wrong with either is one of the sillier notions put forth here, but I guess it wouldn't be BCB if we didn't choose sides on everything.

I almost always end up wanting to stick up for the loser in these things, as the woods seem to be full of people that 'don't get it' (or at least that want to accuse others of the same).

I voted Bowie. I'm just not that keen on Dylan. I've seen both in concert (close, central tickets), I only walked away from the Bowie gig impressed. I'm not a Bowie fanatic by any means. I don't have the albums and I don't play the music but if I hear any one of most of his hits I'm always struck by how very good it is. Dylan is a drag in the mud in comparison. That said, Bowie is just an elderly lifetime (I think) heavy smoker who died of lung cancer who did some great songs, to me. Think I need to distance myself from the outpouring before I feel his loss on my level.

As much as I've enjoyed binge-listening to Bowie these past few days - and despite having re-evaluated some of Bowie's work and gotten pleasure out of some albums I was previously under-acquainted with - it's still Dylan, and I stand by everything I said on this thread.

Dylan has got a lot less interesting to me over the years, there's not a lot to explore once you burn out on the, admittedly great, mid sixties period.
