It's been a long journey from Xmas til today. I've spent 2 weeks at home, virtually non-stop, except for shopping and dog walking. We had visitors from overseas and nearby. We played board games, had BBQ's, family meals, even went to a Teppanyaki restaurant! Yes, it's been hell on earth. Yesterday we sent the last ones on their way home. Today should have been complete bliss. But alas... my wife, who literally starts drooling from numerous orifices when she's confronted with a Scottish accent (M/F) managed to find some shitshow on Netflix or something. I asked her what it's called, and she told me a few times, but I forget (sober, mind you!). I just don't want to know, I'm sure. The main character looks German.
I got out my Qobuz app and headphones, not really having a good idea what I was going to listen to, only that it had to be 'relaxing' after 2 weeks of fucking jolly mayhem. What springs into mind?? Harold Budd!! Not that I know any of his stuff, but there's an occasional contributor on this here board who mentions him every once in a while. And since over the years I've enjoyed and respected at least three of his messages, I thought I'd give it a try.
I've done 3 hours of Harold Budd. To be clear: it's all about euthanasia.
Another 30 minutes of this and I'll walk off in the lake never to be seen again.
Not ready yet! Now I want to sniff some glue.

But I'll remember Harold Budd's stuff for when I'm ready to die a new age death, hopefully not before 2036.

Re: Harold Budd
Outside of the albums he made with Brian I have to be in the mood to spin his music but I do get in those moods so…
It would be helpful to know what you listened to so we could properly judge your taste.
I can appreciate your need for something like Budd after your weeks of entertaining. I couldn’t do two weeks of friends and family. I’m going to Texas next month for my mom’s 90th BD and while I’m looking forward to seeing her, spending an entire week outmof my comfort zone is going to be trying.

Well Mrs Ned and I have largely avoided Christmas 'fun' ... I am most definitely NOT a christian so why on earth would I celebrate it? ... and even I have found the whole period interminable. The only thing that got me through it was Dylan's Xmas album ... but, I'm weird obviously!!
Funnily enough I was playing Budd's 'Perhaps' (what an appropriate title for a ... 'vague' album ) and 'La Bella Vista' a couple of days ago. Budd can be hit or miss. Some of his albums can be rather bland ... but when he gets it right ... the two Eno collaborations, Music for 3 Pianos, Abandoned Cities for example, he really hits the spot.

Re: Harold Budd
"An occasional contributor...."
2 weeks of Christmas festivities immediately followed by 3 hours of Harold Budd sounds like a very dangerous cocktail and talk of death is a little worrying but entirely understandable.
Look after yourself and consider seeking urgent counselling. Whatever your next move is, for the love of God, DO NOT listen to Terry Riley or you may not make it to 6th January, let alone 2036.

What on earth is wrong about Terry Riley? ... mind you I only know 'In C' and 'Rainbow ...' ... always found them rather chirpy pieces myself.

A good point well made Les
I suggest we ignore the cloth-eared, clog-wearing Dutchman, Budd was a genius
For a tyro, I would recommend:
The White Arcades
Luxa
Lovely Thunder
.

In what format?
Lucky man!
A live album recorded in 2007 with Budd playing solo piano in memory of his late friend, and associate teacher at the then newly formed California Institute of Arts, Jim Tenney.
Originally given a digital release in 2007 by David Sylvian and Steve Jansen's Samadhisound and later D&M remastered it and cut it to a double vinyl album
I don’t know if it was ever released on CD
Modern, minimalist solo piano
Robust stuff
.

Re: Harold Budd
I went on 'most popular' and got:
First light
Late October
An Arc of Doves
The Plateaux of Mirror
A Stream with Bright Fish
And there must have been some more.
I will check out his stuff with Eno.
Surely LR was writing in jest, but still... Terry Riley is top notch. I could listen to "Rainbow" any time of the day. It's one of my all-time favorites. To mention him in the same sentence as Harold Budd borders on blasphemy.

Just smoke some bud and sit in the back yard listening to the trees and the birds , that's ambient.

As all of those are Eno collaborations you've heard 25% of what he did with him!

Bloody ‘ell - what a dog’s breakfast lad!
You’ll be buying those Cherry Red compilations next!
Listen to a proper Budd album - they flow!
Incidentally, the collabs with Eno are:
The Pearl
Plateaux of Mirror
You might want to try Eno/Eno/Lanois’ Apollo: Atmospheres & Soundscapes (no Budd)
Incidentally Riley and Budd are like chalk and cheese - it’s like comparing Budgie with the Groundhogs
.

So, similar in fact.
