I would say that Coltrane's entire Atlantic releases are often overlooked. I could have added Coltrane's Jazz, Coltrane Sound and of course Giant Steps and My Favourite Things to my list.
I'm not a wholesale fan of his Impulse! era. I find it hit or miss. Neither Stellar Regions or Ascension get much play in NN towers. A Love Supreme is without a doubt extraordinary ... but do I enjoy it much? The subject matter is a big barrier to my enjoyment; Contrane essentially playing a prayer to god through his sax is not the reason I listen to jazz.
That said I have the (ridiculously metal bound) box set of the classic quartet and that's great.
I remember reading a quote from Elvin Jones (?) Where, towards the end of his life, Coltrane expressed his fears that he was running out of new ground to explore. I agree.
... and of course I still play the 'difficult' albums hoping to hear what he was striving for ... and maybe that's the point.

If I had to put his albums in order, Love Supreme would be No. 1 with a bullet. Wouldn't like to live without it. But I agree with NN: the
Impulse recordings are hit and miss. I can't stand Expression, Meditations and Kulu Se Mama, to name a few. I sold these albums last month. The cancer destroyed his liver and his creativity.

I generally agree but of course Love Supreme is on that label as is the excellent 1962 album Coltrane with McCoy and Elvin on tubs
My five:
Soultrane
Blue Train
Giant Steps
Ole Coltrane
Coltrane Plays the Blues
A Love Supreme (bubbling under)

Well, those are the HITS, my friend. Solid hits.
Others, some of which I mentioned, are blatant misses. His AVG is below .300 when he batted for Impulse.

Africa/Brass
My Favorite Things
The John Coltrane Quartet Plays
Village Vanguard
I like all his stuff. With Miles, his Blue Note albums, the later experimental and free stuff with Alice.
I just like the (mostly) classic quartet albums I list above best.

As with Miles, I don't know the music well enough to give you a top five, I'll just let you have a look at what I've got:
Blue Train
A Love Supreme
Giant Steps
Coltrane Jazz
Coltrane
Live at the Village Vanguard
and this one

These are the five I'd pick too
I would have My Favourite Things in there in place of Souls Trane if he was using a proper instrument instead of playing John the Baptist to Kenny G
I do not like soprano sax at all.
