Songs Of A Lost World - The Cure

Postby Mike Boom » 04 Nov 2024, 17:25

Rather samey , apart from Drone No Drone the songs all sombre epics but when the songs are as graceful and beautiful in that Curish way thats not necessarily a bad thing.

I love the Cure. Their sound washes over you, wraps you in a warm blanket of comforting noise and .....I can rarely tell one tune from another or whether it's a new track or a forgotten oldie. I don't care. Lovely dark notes of security. Buying at weekend

Call yourself a fan? Should have got it the moment it was released.

I know, but Mrs B insisted that we try Tom Kerridge beef cheeks from M&S and they're not cheap! This week, the Cure and a chippie tea

:D

Glad you've got your priorities sorted correctly now.

Tbh I haven't bought it yet - TV broke last Friday so had to get a new one, lawnmower went bang yesterday with blue smoke billowing out of the rear end so got to get that fixed, stacks of family birthdays this month so it might have to wait a bit. November is going to be expensive - still there's always the Christmas list.

I bought a copy on grey bio-vinyl, which was nice.
What wasn't nice was the label on Side 2 was pressed way off centre, right across the playing surface :x
So far no response from Rough Trade returns department.

Probably be worth loads in the future because of the off centre label. ;)

If it's on bio-vinyl does that mean it degrades whilst you're playing it, or after you've had it for a while?

:D

I'm not particularly a fan outside of the singles but Spotify suggested this to me this morning and I rather like it:

Bugger off.

I like it.

Starts and ends strongly, but think it sags a bit in the middle, although more plays may change my mind.
Lead track "Alone","Nothing Is Forever" (track 2), and closer "Endsong" are presently favourites.

"Disintegration" has been my favourite Cure LP ever since I first heard it 35 years ago. Musically this new record is reminding me of that LP as much as any other.
Lyrically it's very bleak (as much as I've paid attention to the lyrics).

Haven't noticed any deterioration in Robert Smith's voice (but then at 65, he's not that ancient).

Adding to The Cure's recorded works after a gep of 16 years could so easily have led to disappointment. I wondered if this record was being over-hyped, and half-expected to feel let down before I'd even finished the first play. After three plays, I'm not feeling that, and am thinking it stands up very well against their previous releases.

Love it! Helped by the fact BBC went Cure mad last weekend, including showing Radio 2 concert where the band played several new tracks as well as the oldies, and that helped me when listening to the album ....recognised quite a few. Live wise, his voice sounded as good as all those years ago, but his hair definitely needs some conditioner

Robert should ask her to design the next album cover. I'm sure it would be wondrous (although maybe a tad too expensive)

Is it really worth it then? Haven't bought one since Bloodflowers.

Their best since "Wish", but don't expect three min pop gems. A lot of the songs build and build before Robert sings a note

Was I the only one who was shocked to learn The Cure had taken over 30 years to call one of their songs 'Alone'?
Mostly dancing sir,...

Saw them in Stockholm in autumn 2022 and they were tremendous. Smith's voice is holding up shockingly well. Haven't heard the new record but as it happens I just bought it for my partner's 50th birthday next week. :)
