Seventies Soft Rock Hits

Postby Mike Boom » 04 Nov 2024, 17:02

I hate the term Yacht Rock, I guess back in the day it was MOR or AOR, or just stuff you heard on the radio a lot. Call it a guilty pleasure they I dont feel guilty.

Walter Egan - Magnet and Steel - apparently an ode to Stevie Nicks who also sang bv's along with Lindsay Buckingham. Reached Number 8 in the US

Gary Wright - Love Is Alive

Ex of Spooky Tooth and keyboards on All Things Must Pass, reached Number 2.

Never really understood the term yacht rock, my understanding was that it was meant to be a derisory and dismissive term. Duran Duran was one band the term was aimed at I seem to remember in order to belittle their music, I always quite liked them.

Yacht Rock, I’ve never heard the term - I had to look it up

I don’t think I ever did AOR

Whatever that is

As you were

Yes definitely, tho they had a hit with Still The One - Jerry Marrotta was their drummer

Another one
Elvin Bishop - Fooled Around And Fell In Love - reached Number 3 on the US charts in 76

I remember "Still the one" and it was, without doubt, a catchy pop song, but more costume jewellery than a real diamond

I love Yacht Rock and think the term is cute.

Always loved this one - it puts me in mind of Steve Winwood.
There is very little in the genre I do not care for.

Pure Prairie League - Amie - from the 72 Bustin Out album that featured one Mick Ronson doing string arrangements - became a hit much later in 75

I rather like it.
Don't really care for the 'Yacht Rock' name though.
Smooth, well-produced, radio-friendly AOR? Just not quite so snappy a label.

Looking Glass - Brandy (You're a fine girl)
I love this. Big US hit, but only a turntable hit in the UK.
I remember acquiring this on a K-Tel (or Ronco or Arcade) compilation LP back when I first started buying records.
In recent years, I believe the track featured prominently in one of The Guardians Of The Galaxy films.

Yeah , good one, the GOTG soundtrack of the first movie is great.

The Baby’s - Isn’t It Time with John Waite on vocals reached number 13

Stories - Brother Louie - originally a hit for Hot Chocolate, but I think I prefer this version.

Andrew Gold - Lonely Boy

So much shit hair and clothes.
And shouty /growly vocals.

I've listened to all the tracks suggested so far and I find them all a bit meh. They've all got nice bits but they're ultimately so witless and smooth my attention just slips right off them.
Except Lido Shuffle. That's aces.

Do those cunts Hall and Oates belong in this category? Or are they poodle rock? Poodles on a Yacht?

Shouty/Growly vocals ?? Huh ? Which song ? The Stories - Brother Louie vocal has a bit of grit but its mostly smooth harmonies all the way , not sure what your listening to there.

Shit hair and clothes ? Of course, its mandatory, its the seventies!

Hall and Oates ? Of course

Poodle rock ? As far as I know thats glam/hair metal from the eighties, Posion etc, horrible fucking shit. But whatever trips your trigger.
