Quiz Questions

Postby J » 22 Sep 2024, 17:57

In another thread Dinosaur (C) posted about the place in New Zealand with the longest place name:

Dinosaur wrote:The longest place name in the world is Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu, located on a hill in New Zealand's Hawke's Bay. The name is 85 characters long and translates to "the place where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, who slid, climbed and swallowed mountains, known as 'landeater', played his flute to his loved one"

Question:
What is the link between it and the UK band Caravan?

I'll post the answer tomorrow (Monday) evening (UK time) if no-one's got it by then.

(Edit : Thread title amended from "Quiz" to "Quiz Questions")

Interesting - I'm intrigued

A: There's a street in Canterbury with even more letters in its name. The road sign goes half way round the block and they sang about it (?)

Kenny G may never have happened.

Quantum Jump and Caravan bassist John G. Perry?

Never seen that TOTP clip before.
I know it's playback but I'm still in awe of Mark Warner's guitar on QJ's debut!

No, not as far as I know...

(my online search for a particularly long street name in Canterbury came up blank)

...though I can almost imagine them doing something like that.

Yes, that's it.
Along with, of course, Quantum Jump's "Lone Ranger" (single video posted above by Tom Waits For No One).

Well done.

Linking from Caravan...

After Caravan's 1974 live LP "Caravan And The New Symphonia", bassist John G Perry left to concentrate on another band he was involved with : Quantum Jump.

Quantum Jump released a couple of LPs but are best known for "The Lone Ranger" single (1976, a hit in 1979 when rereleased).
In an effort to make The Lone Ranger single more interesting the intro was replaced by Rupert Hine singing (a capella) the New Zealand place name " Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu "

More info on Wikipedia : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_Jump

There's actually a further link to Caravan as Geoffrey Richardson also worked with Quantum Jump, but I think that was just on their second LP "Barracuda".

Yes, it's a shame he left before the 2nd LP. His guitar really elevates their debut.

I particularly like this track (especially the final couple of minutes).

Oh yes!!

The debut is great, there's a lot of great moments other than the overplayed hit
I really love this, especially the bass/acoustic guitar interplay in the second half.

Oh, and Perry's more pastoral solo album, Sunset Wading, is a nice Sunday morning record well worth tracking down.

That's another good track - their debut really is a very good record. I played both QJ records at the weekend, and that first LP really stood out and reminded me I should play it far more often.

Reading up on the band yesterday, I was reminded of the third LP "Mixing" (1979). I'd previously thought this was a compilation, but their Wikipedia page describes it as "heavily reworked and remixed". I don't have it, but found it on YouTube earlier today (and also playable from Rupert Hine's website).
There seem to be some differences - No American Starship is a little longer, for example.
Will check this out some more...

Thanks for the info on John Perry's Sunset Wading solo album - I didn't know anything about it!
Found that it's on Spotify and have just started playing it - it sounds interesting and good, will certainly revisit to hear the rest.

The remixes to each album were released as extra tracks on the CD reissues on Esoteric Recordings; Barracuda is a 2CD with a BBC In Concert recording. :geek:

Thanks! I remembered after I posted that those (2015?) Esoteric reissues had extra tracks. Didn't get a chance to look into that during the day, and you've saved me the trouble now!
Thanks again.

(Edit: I think I might have recorded that QJ BBC Radio One In Concert programme onto cassette at the time. The programme went out at about 7:00 or 8:00 pm on Saturdays. I think QJ only had about half of the one hour programme. Can't remember who they shared it with. Goodness knows where the tape is now.)

Question:

Who is the only band to ever have had the first album of a record label TWICE…..?

Hmmm...thought it might be the Moody Blues:

first LP on Deram with "Days Of Future Passed", then
first LP on their own Threshold label with "To Our Children's Children's Children".

Checking it out, I think the Threshold one may be correct, but according to Wikipedia Deram was launched with some easy-listening orchestral pop LPs in Oct 1967, the month before "Days of Future Passed" was released.

So not them.
Will keep thinking.

Frank Zappa.

Zappa Records and Barking Pumpkin.

Does that count seeing as they were his own labels?

That’s an excellent attempt but you are correct, it doesn’t count for the reason you give
