There are a million versions of the Yellow Rose of Texas, some with plenty of oomph.
Or of course there's Beyonce's recent smash Texas Hold'em

I did notice your Move song for California, but assumed you thought Calforia Dreaming too obvious and Califonication too shit.
I kept thinking "swim as far as you can, swim as far as you can".

Jazz generally does have a tune but they don’t necessarily play it to you.

The Bobbie Gentry series was a 6-week special, broadcast weekly from July 13 to August 17, 1968. It featured musicians from the Mississippi countryside, as well as guests such as Donovan, the Hollies, Glen Campbell, James Taylor, Randy Newman, Elton John, Alan Price, Billy Preston, and Pan's People.

I remember loving it at the time but I reeeeeeealy want to see it now I see what an incredible bunch of artists she had on it. I hadn't remembered that.

Yeah, I'd love to see that sometime.

I'm pretty sure I've seen clips from it (I've definitely heard some audio) - so, who knows?

There was a Dead Kennedys song, which I'd say was the best song about California over all.

To be fair, Joanna Newsom's "In California" may be even better, but there's no punning involved there.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Thread already dead?

If you need an intro (or if you still consider replacements), here's the album State Songs by John Linnell (one half of They Might Be Giants)

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_BoE14bGn5JKri_H5tzCw17ZBBhOhnwK

... and as the jury still seems to be out on Vermont, here's something I found while trawling through the Interweb (don't be fooled by the misguiding song title)
