America state by state

When I first mentioned making a playlist on the theme of 'America' ,,,

America? Surely state by state.

So here goes. Though I don't think this is what Limpin' Jez meant.
One song per state.

I'd like it to be songs about the actual states themselves rather than their most important cities but sometimes that seems impossible unless you want something like Colorado How Great Thou Art.

Anyway, this is what I've got at the moment. I could do with suggestions for the blanks and I'd be happy to hear any suggested replacements.

Apologies for the Pussycat. I know it's rather dreadful but it's nostalgic for me. If anyone can point to a good song for Mississippi, please go ahead.

Alabama – Alabama Song (Doors)
Alaska – Stephanie Says (Velvets)
Arizona – By the Time I Get to Phoenix (Glen Cambell)
Arkansas - When Electricity Came to Arkansas (Black Oak Arkansas)
California – California Uber Alles (Dead Kennedys)
Colorado – Colorado (National Lampoon)
Connecticut – Kylie From Connecticut (Ben Folds)
Delaware - Deleware (Heads Hands and Feet)
Florida – Florida! (Taylor Swift)
Georgia – Rainy Night in Georgia (Brook Benton)
Hawaii – Hawaii 5 0 theme (The Ventures)
Idaho – Private Idaho (B52s)
Illinois – Come on Feel the Illinoise (Surfjan Stevens)
Indiana – Indiana wants Me (R Dean Taylor)
Iowa - The Iowa Waltz (Greg Brown)
Kansas – Wichita Linesman
Kentucky – Old Kentucky Home (Randy Newman)
Louisiana – Born on the Bayou (CCR)
Maine – King of the Road (Roger Miller)
Maryland – Baltimore (Randy Newman)
Massachusetts – Massachusets (Bee Gees)
Michigan – Michigan (Devendra Banhart)
Minnesota – Rock ‘n’ Roll is Alive (Prince)
Mississippi – Mississippi Delta (Bobbie Gentry)
Missouri - Missouri Waltz (Johnny Cash)
Montana - Look For Me In Butte (Utah Phillips)
Nebraska – Nebraska (Bruce Springsteen)
Nevada – Reno Nevada (Iain Matthews)
New Hampshire – New Hampshire (Sonic Youth)
New Jersey - You Can’t Catch Me (Chuck Berry)
New Mexico - New Mexico (Richard Houghton)
New York - New York, I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down (LCD Sound System)
North Carolina - Goggy Mountain Breakdown (Flatt & Scruggs)
North Dakota - North Dakota (Lyle Lovett)
Ohio - Ohio (Neil Young or Damien Jurado)
Oklahoma - If You’re Ever in Oklahoma (J.J. Cale)
Oregon - Almost Independence Day (Van Morrison)
Pennsylvania.- Pennsylvania (Bloodhound Gang)
Rhode Island - Sweet Rhode Island Red (Ike and Tina Turner)
South Carolina - South Carolina (The Flirtations)
South Dakota - South Dakota Morning (Bee Gees)
Tennessee - Tennessee Blues (Balham Alligators)
Texas - Texas Hold 'em (Beyonce) or Texas (Charlie Daniels)
Utah - The Beehive State (Harry Nilsson)
Vermont -
Virginia - Sweet Virginia (The Rolling Stones)
Washington - Washington Talkin' Blues (Woody Guthrie)
West Virginia - Take Me Home Country Roads (Lana Del Rey)
Wisconsin - What Made Milwaukee Famous (Jerry Lee Lewis)
Wyoming - Wyoming Songbirds (Damien Jurado)

There are lots of ootions of course, but I suggest a couple of replacements:

Texas - Prairie Rose, Roxy Music
Luoisiana - That was your mother, Paul Simon. I suppose Fagen's Nightfly is more specifically about Baton Rouge.

And though I don't think it is mentioned in the lyrics, Rock Island Line has more to do with Arkansas than you might think.
I kept thinking "swim as far as you can, swim as far as you can".

I don't have a problem with the Pussycat at all but you could consider Mississippi Goddamn by Nina Simone.

Almost Independence Day by Van Morrison for Oregon.

The first thing I thought of, of course, but I don't think I like the song. I'd never heard Lana Del Rey's version though so I gave it a listen. It's ... not bad. I actually prefer a version by Toots and the Maytals, but he changed the lyrics to be about Jamaica.:

Nice guitar solo and drum bit at the beginning but I just find his voice unbearable smug and smart-arse.

Again, my first thought, but, for some reason, Trout Mask Replica isn't on Spotify. And the live versions you can find there are bloody awful. You can hear the people standing next to the person with the cheap cassette recorder chatting through the whole thing.

That'll do.

I'm not a huge fan of this but I can see me ending up with it.

I don't quite hate it but I'm not too keen. Her fretless bass period never did it for me.

I'll take the Roxy Music for now as I've got Lana elsewhere but I'm sticking with CCR because I love it.

I actually read that but decided against choosing this because, a) It doesn't mention Arkansas and b) I hate the bloody song.

Ooh. A much classier choice. I'll have to think about it.

Down South in New Orleans (Bobby Charles, The Band, Dr. John on The Last Waltz).

Picking a Roxy song to represent Texas just makes me cringe. Not that I don't like Roxy, it just ain't right.
Gotta be Texas Tornado by The Doug Sahm Band. Very on pointe for the weather we're having down here.
