Disc 1

Track 1
recorded early 1967 (probably), first released circa 1970
Cardinal International (Belgium) C.3197
Janus (Netherlands) JN 2119
As IB discographer Bas Möllenkramer has noted, almost nothing is known about
the session(s) that produced this song and several others that were re-
leased in haphazard fashion in Continental Europe and Mexico in the early
'70s, "and surviving band members either cannot or will not remember."
Similarly, the identity of the song's supposed composer "D. Hughes" is a
mystery; the song sure sounds like a group original to me.

Tracks 2 through 8
from HEAVY [mono version] (Atco 33-227), released January 22, 1968
Recorded at Gold Star Recording Studios and Nashville West Studios,
Hollywood, California
Produced by Charles Greene & Brian Stone
A York/Pala Records, Inc. Production
("Iron Butterfly Theme" is a composite of the mono LP mix and the
mono 45 mix [see Disc 2, Track 19], realized by CO)

Cherry Red Records QECLEC72744, released December 18, 2020

Tracks 9 through 14
comprise IN-A-GADDA-DA-VIDA (Atco SD 33-250), released June 14, 1968
Basic tracks and some overdubs recorded at Ultra-Sonic Studios, Hempstead,
Long Island, New York, May 27-30, 1968 (Engineer: Don Casale)
Additional overdubs and mixing done at Gold Star Recording Studios,
Hollywood, California (Engineer: Jim Hilton)
Produced by Jim Hilton
(The Ultra-Sonic sessions were very loosely supervised by Shadow Morton.
Neither Morton nor engineer Casale were credited on the album.)
A Greene & Stone Production for York/Pala
Source: Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab UDSACD 2118, released January 2, 2020
This Mobile Fidelity reissue was transferred from the original master
tape. Before the album was mastered and released in 1968, a decision was
made to swap the stereo channels on three of the songs ("Most Anything You
Want", "Are You Happy", and the title track) and to add an additional
layer of reverb to everything, as well as the usual EQ-ing. I have replica-
ted the stereo assignments of the original release here, but have not
added reverb or EQ.

Disc 2

Tracks 1 - 9
comprise BALL (Atco SD 33-280), released January 17, 1969 (re-sequenced for
this compilation)
Recorded at Gold Star Recording Studios, Hollywood, California

Produced and Engineered by Jim Hilton
A Greene & Stone Production for York/Pala
Source: UNCONSCIOUS POWER: AN ANTHOLOGY 1967-1971, Esoteric/
Cherry Red Records QECLEC72744, released December 18, 2020

Track 10
originally released (in mono) on "I Can't Help But Deceive You Little Girl"/
"To Be Alone" (Atco 45-6712), September 16, 1969
Produced by Arif Mardin
Stereo mix first released in 1991 as a bonus track on Repertoire RR 4128-WZ
(HEAVY), released 1991 - the source for this compilation
Compressed by CO

Tracks 11 & 21
from Atco SD 33-318, LIVE, released April 22, 1970
Recorded November 7, 1969 at Aaron Russo's Kinetic Playground (Chicago) and
December 13, 1969 at San Diego Sports Arena
Edited and mixed at American Recording Company, Studio City, California
(Mixing Engineer: Bill Cooper)
Produced by Richard Podolor
A Greene & Stone Production for York/Pala
Track 21 slightly re-edited by CO

Cherry Red Records QECLEC72744, released December 18, 2020 -
except for the first drum hit of "Butterfly Bleu [edit]", taken from
Rhino Records R2-71522 (METAMORPHOSIS), released 1993

Track 19
from "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida"/"Iron Butterfly Theme" (Atco 45-6606),
released July 31, 1968
Source: UNCONSCIOUS POWER: AN ANTHOLOGY 1967-1971, Esoteric/
Cherry Red Records QECLEC72744, released December 18, 2020

(Disc 2, track 12 is the last half-minute-plus of "Butterfly Bleu" - backwards; I felt I needed some kind of brief bridge between the "old" Iron Butterfly and the "new" one, and after trying a few other things I tried this and it worked a treat. "[hidden track 1]" is a radio ad for Ban Roll-On deodorant; "hidden track 2" is an edit of the I-A-G-D-V drum solo from the Live album.)
