John Hawken RIP

Postby C » 19 May 2024, 09:39

John Hawken 84, was an English keyboard player, best known as a member of The Nashville Teens, Renaissance, and the Strawbs. He also played in Spooky Tooth, Third World War, Vinegar Joe and Illusion

RIP John Hawken - Strawbs Keyboardist
From Dave Cousins FB page:

JOHN HAWKEN PASSES

It is with deep sadness that I must tell you that John Hawken passed away peacefully with his family at his side at 2pm US Eastern Standard Time today.

John Hawken joined Strawbs in late 1973. His contribution to the Strawbs legacy was immense and with John on board Strawbs played consistently to the band’s biggest audiences. The breakthrough for Strawbs in the US and Canada was the 1974 album ‘Hero and Heroine’. The following 1975 album ‘Ghosts’ charted even higher in the Billboard charts. John’s keyboard work contributed greatly to our success.

John Hawken was renowned for his sensitive touch on the piano, most notably on ‘The Winter Long’ from ‘Autumn’. John became highly adept on Mellotron and Moog synthesizer, defining the backbone of the Strawbs sound.

John, I will miss you so much. Not only for your playing, but also for your sense of humour, which brought tears to my eyes every time we met up.

Gone, but never to be forgotten. Much love

The piano on that first Renaissance album is really something else!!
His stuff with Strawbs was nice too, but no contest.

Another sad loss.

Fairly certain he was in the Strawbs when I saw them last, at The Brook in Southampton. Tremendous gig, they played most of Hero & Heroine.

RIP John.

I love the album he did with Third World War - their second. He replaced Tony Ashton, and was with their touring band before the album was recorded.

TWW were the original punk band - not musically, which came from The Stooges/MC5/garage/New York Dolls.

But lyrically - 'Coshing Old Lady Blues', and this one, which gave the name to a later Chiswick (unrelated) band:

In 1972!

And that gonzoid barrelhouse piano from John Hawken at the end holding its own against the guitars:

I’ve got just the thing for you, a real cop beater
A sawed-off 12 gauge, five shot repeater
Get your arse along down to Hammersmith town
Join the urban guerrillas, take up arms against the crown

Hey red
So you're discontented
Those politicians think
We're weak and demented
Taking us for fools
Breaking our balls
Join the Hammersmith Guerillas
It's time we changed the rules
Hey red
It's time we changed the rules

Now come on all you rebels
Come on what do you say?
Company recruits in your boiler suits
You ain't gonna lose those low wage blues no way
Come on all you rebels, what do you say?
Join the Hammersmith Guerillas
Don't you talk about the wrong and the right, get up and fight
