The one redeeming album by Styx

Postby GoogaMooga » 17 Jan 2022, 01:08

I'm getting rid of my Styx albums, they are really horrible. Almost as bad as Supertramp. Pompous pop-rock. Their saving grace is the multi-platinum selling "Cornerstone" album from 1979, notable for the two stand-outs, "Babe" (a massive hit) and "Boat on the River". I had that on vinyl in my teens, but now I think I've only got those songs on a comp. Doesn't really matter, that's all the Styx I need. Zilth Pilchards has got the "Cornerstone" album on CD, he got that of his own accord.

Hey! don't be so dismissive of Supertramp! "Crime of the Century" is a fine pop/rock album. As for Styx, the only thing I know by them is the horrendous "Babe".

I wouldn't pick Cornerstone as the best.

I'd go for The Grand Illusion.

And Supertramp released a number of fine LPs.

I tried their GH album a few months ago. Bloody awful.

I do like Sail Away though.

Not keen on the music but they did have some pretty good cover designs though.

I do like Styx. Saw them twice. The run from Equinox to Cornerstone/ Pieces Of Eight (forget which is later) is excellent. Grand Illusion is definitely the highlight.

You will not be heard to fire AC/DC while keeping a Styx record.

I'm keeping a comp for two songs (hope there are more, haven't played it in a long time).

I'm also trading in two Geordie comps (pre-AC/DC). No mercy.

Styx was in my top three bands when I was first seriously getting into music, and a fair amount of it is still very enjoyable to me, though some in a comedic Spinal Tap-ish way. 'The Serpent is Rising' in particular is hilarious. 'Equinox' is an album that I would recommend in a fully non-ironic manner, though. Very strong melodies, no overload of bombast.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

"Sail Away" is fantastic - so utterly cheesy it transcends awful to come out the other side as great - used to great effect in the Virgin Suicides.

Zilth Pilchards has got the "Cornerstone" album on CD, he got that of his own accord.
Fascinating!

A former member of BCB whose name I like to keep alive because it is so original.

Cornerstone is actually the weakest LP from the rather good run of '77 - '81 Styx albums I'd recommend for those inclined.
