Pentangle

Postby C » 28 Nov 2021, 15:02

A quote from my dear friend on the recent Basket of Light PSL

LMG wrote:Probably just me, but I find the band's eclectic mix of styles works against them much of the time. Several of the albums seem more like a good compilation of 'folk/blues from the Soho sound' as opposed to the effort of one band (unlike Trees, for example).

This album is more cohesive than others, I find.

When Chris wrote this I started to write a reply - basically agreeing with him, but then reflected and changed my mind.

But is he correct? I've played the first six albums since and some are more cohesive than others and I tend to agree (and indeed did before the comment) think that sometimes they take on too many eclectic styles as Chris suggested.

That is not a criticism because all the tracks are great stuff but put together on one album sometimes affect the flow in detrimental way.

The album that always comes to mind is the second album - Sweet Child

"Haitian Fight Song" - written by Charles Mingus is a good example

I love the track but is it a Pentangle song...?

And from the debut the second track (!) "Bells" - an 'odd' place to put a tub solo - again a brilliant track

Now, I'm not sure what my point is here (!) but might a more 'constant' approach helped their 'cause'

Or were they doing a 'pretentious' and not giving a damn?

For me, perhaps, Basket of Light is better because it is more constant.

Maybe. Maybe not

I like 'em both, and appreciate the debut more than Fairport's.

I, too, prefer Fairport's debut. I struggle with Pentangle.... brilliant individuals but not always cohesive as a group

Fairport's debut is too much like early Airplane which is no bad thing but the eclectic mix of The Pentangle's platter has the edge for me

That‘s what I like about it although I think the Airplane connection is over exaggerated, true it has a west coast feel to it, which is what I like about it. Always thought it a shame that they didn’t pursue this a little further.

As for Pentangle, I gave the whole album a listen again this p.m. and whilst no-one could accuse them of lacking musicianship it is pretty samey and becomes dull after a few tracks, at least to these ears anyway, whilst the Fairport album has feel and some soul about it - horses for courses I guess.

It’ll be a long while before Pentangle gets played again in this home but the first Fairport could easily be played anytime soon.

I find the JA comparison puzzling. They sound nothing like them IMO.

As much as I love Richard and Sandy I prefer Pentangle, especially the first album.

Cruel Sister is the most consistent album, surely?
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.
