RIP George Frayne (AKA Commander Cody)

Postby toomanyhatz » 27 Sep 2021, 00:48

Hasn't hit the news yet, but according to his Facebook page, he's left the building.

Best-known for "Hot Rod Lincoln," but other than that fluke hit, he resisted all efforts to soften the Lost Planet Airmen's psychedelic honky-tonk music into something as bland as "country-rock." Toured relentlessly until just a few years ago; last show in spring 2019 from what I can find.

No cause of death reported as yet.

. Got Jimi's autograph after the show and went on to see him several times that year

I fucking hate Hot Rod Lincoln in all its incarnations but Lost In the Ozone is ace. Which is all I know.

Of course, both Commander Cody and Charley Ryan's versions.

Great guy, love his live albums in particular - his passing hits me harder than others' these days (never liked Status Quo much, for instance)

Commander Cody was one of my first exposures to any kind of country music, along with Gram and Emmylou. To think I bought Lost in The Ozone almost 50 years ago ! Great live band, and got to see them for free the same week I was staying on Cornell campus and got to see the famous Dead show.

I saw him open for Led Zeppelin at Knebworth in 79.
I recall not much more than that one song Two Triple Cheeseburgers, Side Order of Fries - which I could still sing you now, 42 years later
and meanwhile I'm still thinking
