Absolutely. The debut showed so much promise but the band became rudderless. Prog? Rock? Pop?

Yes. The debut is superb. Rapidly diminishing returns there after.

I'd also be happy with Ocean Rain as the sole Echo and the Bunnymen album.

Gilbert O'Sullivan's Himself was head and shoulders above his other records.

I think Rorsch is right: The Kinks should have stuck to singles and that probably put some of them on a 'best of' alum. I really don't like any of their studio albums as a whole. I have a lot of time for Madness first album, but that's it. I sort of agree on the Pink Floyd statement but then that first album should have been a double, incl. Saucerful of Secrets. I can't recall ever hearing anything by Argent so no comments on that one.

I’m not having this. The Kinks had great singles, of course. But they had a strong run of great albums as well. I wouldn’t be without either. No way.

At least up to and including Muswell Hillbillies, quite a run.

The 2CD God Save the Kinks is one of my favorite comps, ever!

Wishbone Ash, Argus.

U2, Achtung Baby!

No.No.

Wishbone Ash: Wishbone Ash & There's the Rub

U2: Boy & War

I'll offer:

The Stone Roses

UB40

Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Works Volume 1 would have been a bit of a daft title if there was never a Volume 2, though, if you think about it.

Debuts by the following... they never bettered their first albums

Boston
The Enid
King Crimson
Propaganda
Frankie Goes To Hollywood
Lilac Time

If the answer isn’t debuts aren’t you just arguing about which is the artists best album?

Yes, I guess this true. It should be bands that should have stopped after the debut which will discount a few including Wishbone Ash.

And sticking to the debut rule I'll nominate Judie Tzuke whose debut is a wonderful album but I've never heard another album of hers that came close to the quality of that.

Indeed, like Listen without prejudice vol. 1 and that Bowie record called 1. Outside - whatever happened to other nine albums?

I know that's the orthodoxy on this site and I'm even surprised that anyone agreed with me, but I don't rate any of their albums.
Personal taste.
I just don't happen to care for shopping lists set to nursery rhyme tunes.

I don't think I've ever heard a Kinks album other than a compilation

Well I think The Rolling Stones should have been a singles band until, maybe, Between the Buttons, so it’s ok.

Well it could well be. I haven't actively avoided hearing their albums, they've just never crossed my radar which is kind of odd considering my musical preferences. I do enjoy their singles.
