RIP Chuck E. Weiss

Postby Muskrat » 21 Jul 2021, 19:53

His family and close friends had been trying to put a lid on Chuck's demise (cancer, I think) untiol a formal announcement, but a couple of people who'd have been in on it have posted, so I'm going to take the liberty.

There was a lot more to Chuck than his friendship with Tom Waits and Rickie Lee Jones. For one thing, he had one of the baddest bands in town, with a years'-long residency at the Central on the Sunset Strip.

More

The official Facebook page for Kinky Friedman, one of Weiss’ longtime musical pals and colleagues, shared the following late Tuesday evening:

Kinky’s dear pal and L.A. music legend Chuck E. Weiss has passed away. Kinky rarely made a trip to L.A. without meeting Chuck E. for lunch at Cantor’s Deli and they’d just recently finished writing a song together titled appropriately enough “See You Down The Highway”. RIP Chuck E.

And…

Weiss released his first album, “The Other Side of Town,” in 1981 via Select Records. The album contains the guitar-driven cut “Gina,” among other demos. Weiss then formed his band, the G-d Damn Liars, and they began a weekly gig performing at the Sunset Strip club the Central. When the venue threatened to go under after 11 years, Weiss partnered with his friend and musical collaborator Depp to revamp it as the Viper Room, which became a famous L.A. venue, as well as notorious as the site of River Phoenix’s death in 1993.

I only ever had just one album by Chuck.

Not that he's released dozens.

Rickie lied. It wasn't her he was in love with.
Bugger off.

It was Katy who lied. But that was by another band.
