McCartney 321

Postby Mike Boom » 18 Jul 2021, 16:35

Just finished watching this series with Macca and Rick Rubin. Way better than I expected, really concentrates on the music, going thru the master tapes, some real wow moments, could have easily been way longer, hopefully they will do another series. Great stuff.

I was wondering if I was going to have to sign up for Hulu! I guess so.

I've watched the first two of the six.
Nice to hear some different stories, not the usual Macca remembers (although there are still some of these, like the BOTR demos robbery story).
I like the format, play a master and mess about with the track (I loved the contrasting bass and acoustic tracks on While My Guitar) whilst giving some insight, Rubin as a fan but also giving opinion. Very watchable.

Yeah, some of the bass parts were amazing, how he played with a pic to make it sound like a tuba on Maxwells Silver Hammer (I always thought it WAS a tuba!) and the rather interesting comment after telling the old story of how "nobody else wanted to play the bass so I did " , "you can control the whole band with the bass you know".

As a side note: it’s filmed in black & white, where usually today it would be in colour, yet all the photo stills, which are usually shown in black & white, are shown colourised.

Just watched the last episode.
The ‘And Your Bird Can Sing’ bit was just fab.

Macca’s amazing movable memory was in play when discussing ‘Here There and Everywhere’

One of John’s favourite songs, we’d just finished the album and we were listening to when we were sharing a ski lodge as we were filming Help he said how much he liked it’ :?

Only watched the first 3 episodes so far. I'm enjoying them breaking down the songs and listening to only certain instruments in songs. Paul is a little to self congratulating but otherwise I'm liking the style and Ricks input.

He can be but there are also moments when he seems genuinely surprised at just how good something was without realizing it until he hears it isolated (the bass in While My Guitar.....for example). I like how he doesn't shy away from emphasizing how important George Martin was and often gives the guy his due for helping making the records what they became.

The choice of songs is really interesting too, from the classics to obscure b sides like Check My Machine which help keep thing interesting and not going over the same ground.

I've only seen 3 episodes but can't wait to see the rest.

I would love to watch it but In Spain it's only on some Disney channel and I refuse to pay for that.

Bugger...

More McCartney on the telly tonight in the UK

BBC 2 - An Evening Of Paul McCartney

7.55 - McCartney at The BBC
9.25 - McCartney at The Cavern Club
10.55 - Idris Elba Meets Paul McCartney

I think the 'At The BBC' is the only new programme but there's not much else on so it might be worth a watch.

I watched the McCartney 321 thing and have to say I found it a little underwhelming. Maybe it's better not to have a Beatle Lifer do it, and maybe Paul was more open with Rick Rubin than he would be with others, but it seemed like a missed opportunity to me. It's nice to hear multi-tracks chopped up a little, but it's mostly just Rubin sitting on the floor or standing next to McCartney, bobbing his head with his weird appearance of having repeated profound revelations. I like hearing Rick Rubin talk about music, but I don't know about this thing.

Of course, I watched it all.
