Richard Thompson a very accomplished guitarist

Les - you might not know my running/Muswell Hill/Fairport/Doctor's Surgery story....

No doubting this is a freaking masterpiece, however.

Apparently one of the revelations of Richard's autobiography (haven't read it yet) is that he left Fairport in part because the tempos just got ridiculously out of control to the point where the choons were getting lost - which he attributed to Swarb's taste for diet pills.

I find House Full pretty damned thrilling, but I get that it could be exhausting and unsatisfying at the extremes.

I'd go with a squirrel's testicle, or maybe a racoon's. Still close, but less so.

You could argue - and many have - that Sandy's more emotionally compelling. Might be so, but I think Maddy beats her for range, tone, AND raw power.

I need to work some Fairport into my own repertoire and Matty Grove would work well. Chords are easy and not busy so easy to lead in a group jam.

Was it Simon who defended the electricity of this song in terms of appropriateness to the violence of the story? I get how it could be compelling with a single, traditional voice, but I also agree with him that the music drives the story too.

Glad for a world where we have both.

Didn't know he had an autobiography, nor the Swarb tempo story - thanks.

This one's slow too, but it works for me. Thompson lyrics, trad melody.

The live album. Where the tempos get truly insane. For all Richard's complaints, I'm sure having to keep up with Swarb's runs helped solidify his rep as a guitar hero.
