John Fahey: Your Past Comes Back To Haunt You (2011)

Postby Your Friendly Neighbourhood Postman » 26 Jun 2021, 13:05

...after writing a bit on that upcoming Beach Boys boxed set (Feel Flows), I thought about this collection; I find it a truly amazing release, a treasure trove:

Pitchfork's rating is completely deserved and correct:

Are there more devotees here?

(Oh, and I also love Rhino's The Return of the Repressed, BTW.)
On the whole, I'd rather be in Wallenpaupack.

I’m a fan of Fahey and own a handful of lps but not sure I need this set though it looks fantastic. It’s only because I am trying to not increase my possessions, even musical ones that I find it easy to pass up. He’s great though and unique amongst American guitarists.

As I think I wrote here back when it came out, it's wonderful, but really intended for Fahey fanatics/completists; I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who didn't already have all his proper albums from 1959-1968 (at least).

Good points, Charlie -

it's not a set for those who want to begin to get acquainted with Fahey, so to speak. It's not inexpensive, and you'd be better off to seek out the best of the Takoma releases (or Reprise) to find out about him; and IIRC the Rhino double set can still quite easily be found second hand.

BTW: my point of entry was Of Rivers And Religion, a great album.
On the whole, I'd rather be in Wallenpaupack.
