Randy Newman
Did I do this one before? If so, ignore.
I'll tell you straightaway I gave him up after 1983's Trouble in Paradise. But everything that came before is just so damn good.
Witty observations, sharp criticism, cutting truths in all his lyrics.
His Good Old Boys album is still his best overall for me with Sail Away a close second.
Has Randy been forgotten?

Re: Randy Newman
I fucking love Randy Newman. Mostly the same period as you, Yves.
I know it's not the consensus view, but I particularly like Little Criminals, especially because of Texas Girl at the Funeral of Her Father, Baltimore, Kathleen (Catholicism Made Easier) and Old Man on the Farm: four of my favourite songs by anyone, ever.
And I don't thinkhe's been forgotten. Thanks to Toy Story, he's probably a lot more famous than he was when he was producing the material we like best.

Got five or six of his albums but can't remember the last time I played any of them, I'll have to dig a couple out to remind myself what they sound like. I know I've got Good Old Boys, Sail Away and 12 Songs plus two or three others.

Rednecks
I Think its Going to Rain Today
Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear
Political Science
Love Story (You and Me)
Baltimore
Short People
Jolly Coppers on Parade
Sail Away
Dixie Flyer
to name but a few personal favourites, he's a genius.
Asia's crowded and Europe's too old
Africa is far too hot and Canada's too cold
And South America stole our name
Let's drop the big one
There'll be no one left to blame us
We'll save Australia
Don't wanna hurt no kangaroo
We'll build an All American amusement park there
They got surfin too
enough said.

I think it was Davey on here who really made sure i paid attention to Randy - and I'm grateful to him for it because he was a bit of a blindspot for me until then.

The run of Rednecks, Sail Away and Little Criminals, is a holy trinity as far as I'm concerned.
I first heard him when Annie Nightingale played Jolly Coppers on Parade, on her sunday night request show, probably early 80s, and was hooked ever after.
I remember seeing him in London a few years ago, when he eventually started taking requests from the audience. Fortunately someone had the good sense to request Louisiana 1927.

That song became problematic for him. He got a letter from a black guy who said he was made to feel very uncomfortable when he was in the audience once and Randy Newman played that song. Apparently, a lot of (white) people around him were joining in with a relish that showed no sense of irony.
I can't remember if he said that he'd stopped playing it altogether, or just in certain places where it seemed to elicit that kind of reaction.
Bugger off.

I credit every plaudit and praise and presume that everyone is right and he is great. But I am simply not interested in his music. Not my bag.

Re: Randy Newman
I too kind of stop where Yves has with Newman’s albums though I’m sure I would like newer material. Outside of those classics already mentioned I enjoy his early live one and 12 Songs though the selection of songs are pretty similar on those two. The first one is pretty good too. I also have a dvd from quite a while back with Ry Cooder and Linda Ronstadt guesting that is very good. It is mostly Randy and the piano.

I really should give him another chance.
I always hated Short People so I really only know a few of his hits

I think you broke up too early.
Two examples:
(The second could be considered cheating, as it's not Randy singing, but it works a treat with his voice too)

Difficult to categorise his music. I just find him "weary".

Re: Randy Newman
He would have been alright on Esther rantzens that's life I guess. Although Richard Stilgoe is almost Dylanesque when you compare it to the pap Mike Boom posted.
