Supergroup excitement

Probably one for the older BCB'er.

Did you get excited when the press anounced the forming of a super group? Could you not wait to hear their product?

Marriot and Frampton forming Humble Pie.

Winwood and Clapton in Blind Faith.

Emerson, Lake and Palmer in...

Crosby, Stills, Nash.

I wonder if there were any more recent supergroups?

When you were young you got excited about it.
But when you were older you knew better knowing that the result would be way less than the sum of the parts.

It was really playing the Small Faces' singles yesterday that got me thinking about this.

That first Humble Pie single was good enough but their album I found disappointing.

Paul Rogers and Jimmy Page in The Firm was a big let down. I liked the Trio of doom, and maybe one or two others, but the were usually a let down. Rubbish like the Greedy Bastards, or nonsense like the Travelling Willburys. In fact anything which involved Jeff Lynne was a disaster.

Listening to the Small Faces singles is always a pleasure.
Listening to Humble Pie is always a bore *

* I must admit to not knowing their material. Always switched of midway through some tedious jamming.

I liked the idea of Blind Faith, shame they didn't go further, their one album was pretty good. As for Humble Pie I have made my views clear about them often on Reap Corner, just appalling whereas I loved Small Faces. Really like the Travelling Wilburys, shame they weren't able to produce more than two, wasn't over keen at first but grew to really like their albums.

Bad Company were a supergoup weren't they? They started well but the law of diminishing returns soon set in. Nothing after Led Zep worked for Page really did it?

Wasn't Big Audio Dynamite meant to be a supergroup of sorts? The first couple of albums were okay and Them Crooked Vultures were a supergroup supposedly - Josh Homme, John Paul Jones and Dave Grohl, together they made one okay racket of an album. Black Country Communion were/are a supergroup of sorts, again okay if you like a heavy racket.

Liked all the ones you mentioned except Humble Pie which was a band for wasted talent.

Electronic produced three really quite good albums.

I don't know if Terry Hall and Mushtaq counts as a supergroup, but the Hour of Two Lights was excellent.

They both made average albums IMO.

I remember buying a Liquid Tension Experiment cd just based on the label saying who was in the band. I was thinking, "oh man, this is gonna be amazing" and it turned out to be all tasteless jamming.

I think the bottom line is that there's no 'super group' that ever REALLY lived up to the hype. Of all those collaborations Deja Vu is probably the best and will never be equalled.

I recall having great expectations for the 80s "prog supergroup" Asia. The combined CVs of Downes, Howe, Palmer and Wetton was a veritable history of British progressive rock. Their first album was ultimately a disappointment, with the production aimed mass commercial success with very little of the calibre of musicianship of the band's members on display. Their second album was largely poor and I got rid of it quite rapidly.

Apart just one album, I ignored the many albums they released in the 80s, 90s and 00s, in part put off by the revolving door of band members. However, I did like the final two albums they released with Wetton - XXXX and Gravitas. By this stage they had developed a superior AOR sound that you would expect of a band with their backgrounds.
