Of course, Bob has a great voice too

He is able to sing with delicacy and emotion and the next scream like a banshee!

get the violins out...!

[or is it cellos...?]

I'm not complaining - just noting a period of my life, in context fairly brief when I didn't hear much new. The radio would have been pretty much my only chance to hear the new, wonder if anyone else other than Peel have played this, not that I was listening to Peel much then.

Violas and Cellos please!!

One of my faves on the album

Good points all well made.

And very true.

I had dropped Peel by then

I was never a radio man but I used to listen to Tommy Vance on a Friday night but probably not as late as 1989...

[a pretty worthless comment then! ]

All the reviews implied you had to have an appreciation of Husker Du to approach the album, which is total rot.

Should think you're spot on. From what I recall of Husker Du were harder, rockier, more atonal. This is lighter, more obviously melodic and full of acoustic guitar.

I had a dream twenty-five years ago - I was lecturing and a powerful figure came in and interrupted proceedings to tell me off. He said 'When are you going to read Nietzsche, listen to Bob Mould, and sort yourself out?'

Bleddy subconscious!

You know, and I'm certainly not making the case with this album) but often I found albums [CDs] of the late 80s/early 90s far too long - often up to an hour.

For me, and of course it depends on the musical content, but 45 minutes or there abouts suits me best

"Compositions for the Young and Old"

So nice organ going on in the background

The Huskers had force, but their work was like broad brushstroke graffiti.

This is more like spending an hour with an expert restoring a Da Vinci masterpiece.

Bob Mould definitely agreed. He said with the last Sugar album he wanted to make it two vinyl sides, like an LP. He said it should be something an average guy could listen to all of in his lunch break.

That always stuck with me.

Not one duff track on the entire album.

All of them reward repeated listening.

"Lonely Afternoon"

I love this track but every time the first two lines irritate me (and I'm certainly not a lyric man - far from it)

But two 'houses' - am I missing something?

Well, the silence in this house
It echoes in this house

It jars with me every time

Sorry!

I have never noticed that.

I now hate this track, and the entire album becomes unbalanced.

Cheers! :x

Re 45 mins - the issue of quality control also plays a big part. Not many people can come up with enough good songs for 60 mins, or have the nous to provide enough variety in arrangement/production to sustain interest for that long.
