The Charisma Years 1970-1978 Van Der Graaf Generator

Postby ConnyOlivetti » 30 May 2021, 19:49

https://store.hmv.com/store/music/cd/th ... -1970-1978

A lavish deluxe 20-disc boxed set covering Van der Graaf Generator's entire recorded work for Charisma Records. Between the years 1970-1978 the band released 8 albums (two under the name Van der Graaf) for the legendary Charisma label. Each record was ground breaking and the influence of the band's unique music would be felt in the ensuing decades by artists of many different musical genres. The albums 'H to He Who Am the Only One', 'Pawn Hearts', 'Godbluff' and 'Still Life' have been stunningly remixed from the original multi-track tapes in both stereo and 5.1 surround sound by Stephen W Tayler. These feature on 4 additional CDs and two Blu ray discs. Also featured are two CDs of a recently discovered and previously unreleased entire concert recorded in Paris in December 1976 by French radio and all of the surviving BBC sessions recorded by the band, plus much much more.

£ 130 is a bit steep as I have all the regular albums.

Still, those extras....

The only prog band I really like. Might get this one. Together with the Tom Waits' 10-CD box this will have me covered until autumn.

My 3rd fave prog band after Yes and PG Genesis, but I won't be splashing out on this. I own all the studio albums and several live ones and that's enough for me. I love them the way they are. As for live tracks, I've learned my lesson, thanks to Neil Young. That man owes me a fortune

About the same here

I can't be doing with these big box sets of albums that I already own

For me, its a bargain, 20 discs for that price, blu-ray with surround mixes (4 albums)
dont care for the surround though
but as the mastering so far is awful on Cd, lets hope they get it right this time
(and Hammill himself has stay away reg this one, Hugh Banton is involved in the surround stuff)

When I saw there was to be a Caravan set, I was really pleased. A nice box of the first eight or nine albums and a disc of extra's would be lovely. But what is this nonsense. 32 discs? And nine of them live. Who on earth would pay £275 for it. Madness and a missed opportunity.

Sane here, yomp.
Was keen on it but this is crazy.
Since it's a limited edition, maybe some of the individual remixed discs come out separately.

Apparently, you can't preorder the VDGG box from the US yet.
