Julian Cope

Postby C » 24 Apr 2021, 16:45

I do love a bit of Julian Cope.

I've been a fan since the lad's Teardrops days.

I have umpteen of his solo albums and 20 Mothers is one of my faves

Here's a lovely track with some nice instrumentation around 1:50 - seminally robust

ooofness by the bucketful!

And other fans [other than copehead]....?

I like him quite a bit without calling myself a 'fan'

Love the Teardrops though - I'd call myself a fan of them.
The Complete Jah Bob Mp3 set now available in the usual place, should you want one.

Ditto. Have three solo, but not a patch on the Teardrops albums.

I am surprised you didn't get the next one Mike - Jehovahkill - considered by many to be one of the lad's best.

From the next few: Rite and Rite 2 are very 'krautrock' influenced and corkers.

Autogeddon is delightful too

And of course 20 Mothers which is essential

I'm only familiar with Peggy Suicide, which I really like but haven't listened to in ages. I'm not sure why I haven't listened to more, especially as I really enjoyed his autobiography, Head On*.
Anyone else read that? As one critic commented, he either has an unfeasibly good memory or he kept very extensive diaries. The detail he puts into everything is amazing.

I guess I'll try the Teardrops albums.

* Just found out there's a sequel. Anyone know if it's as good as the first one?
Bugger off.

I'd recommend reading 'Repossessed', he writes really well.

I'd also recommend you try the Teardrops albums, even 'Everybody Wants To Shag....'

This is a decent collection to get a taste of the Teardrops and early solo Cope

I wasn't very effusive about his sequel was I :? , but from what I can remember I enjoyed it as much as, if not more than, Head On.
His 'getting my shit together in the country' book.

One of those people I'm glad is there and active, rather than being a particular fan of. I mean, I've got both Teardops albums, but I don't listen to them regularly, own none of his solo stuff, but he's out there doing his own thing, and that's good by me. I saw him live once doing a solo acoustic set in Manchester, which was really good fun, and I'd definitely watch him again, if the chance arose.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

I don't think we get surprised anymore that musicians and performers we like turn out to be dickheads. Cope's dick-head-omiter probably goes up to 11.
