Selling out

Postby Walk In My Shadow » 19 Apr 2021, 12:10

1. Rod Stewart

Steampacket, Jeff Beck Group. The Faces, the world's greatest drunk 'n roll band.

His solo stuff was pretty good too.

But was Smiler the end of the good period? Or was half of Atlantic Crossing (that title!) still decent?

Anyway, after that he definitely sold out to America save for the olbligatory MTV Unplugged.

2. David Coverdale

In Deep Purple Mk 3. A couple of solo albums in 1977 and '78. They were good.

On to Whitesnake (the band) with the excellent help of guitarists Micky Moody and Bernie Marsden. Jon Lord and Ian Paice helped out.
On their first albums they sort of re-invented the blues rock genre. Fantastic if you're a fan.
But Coverdale wanted America too so he discovered power metal and found himself new guitar players. End of.

3. Paul Rodgers

I can't bear myself to write about him without throwing up.

One of the greatest English voices, ever. From the greatest English blues rock band, ever.
But he had to go and form an average rock 'n roll band and with the help of Led Zep's manager conquered America.
An opportunist and money grabber (touring 'The songs of Free' ) in every way.

Selling out ? They all just got older, less relevant and needed to find a way to carry on performing.
I bet you would have booed Dylan when he went electric.
If I jerk- the handle jerk- the handle you'll thrill me and thrill me

Don't be stupid.

That's when he became great.

Robert Fripp.

Took Hyde Park by storm
Made some excellent albums with some superb musicians

Split up

Reformed as Discipline
Within six months changed the band's name back to Crimso.

Produced some dirge like albums with a bunch of wasters

Gets tin helmet and retires from the firing line...

Only joking - only half of it is fair!

I'm surprised you didn't mention his stint with Queen, unless you are including it under "money grabbing".

I must have banned that from my mind.
