Re: NOW PLAYING.
It’s cool you’re listening to these in chronological order. You can really hear them messing around with different stuff on Tejas and then the jump to Deguello is huge. It puts the 80s records in context and makes them seem more inevitable.

Tejas seemed like a bit of a dip, maybe I need to hear it a couple more times? Certainly Deguello was a return to what I was enjoying, and I'm up to Eliminator which would have been the intro to the 14 year old me through MT USA on Irish television back in '83. Those videos were ubiquitous at the time...

Re: NOW PLAYING.
There are no weak ZZ Top albums from '71 - '85. Yes, I'm including Afterburner - the production is shit, the songs are for the most part good.

Re: NOW PLAYING.
Some great ZZ Top albums there!
Today:
New Wave Hot Dogs by Yo La Tengo,
a homemade compilation of unreleased Prince tracks (ca. early '90s),
The Tower by Motorpsycho while driving in the car,
Traditional Techniques - the great Stephen Malkmus album from last year,
a Belgian favorite - the Tired Of Being Young EP by Mauro & the Grooms,
Sebadoh III (everytime I hear it, it makes me think 'what the hell')
and now Neil Young's Harvest Moon to end the day.

Re: NOW PLAYING.
Wow, there are a couple of sounds reminiscent of the Art of Noise as this kicks off...

Re: NOW PLAYING.
Today's listening -
Some Pavement live shows from 1995: june 27 at the Loft in Berlin where they played a lot of Wowee Zowee, and august 14 at Lollapalooza, Irvine Meadows, CA in full willfullness, playing mostly early EP tracks and a long jam on Stereolab's 'Contact'.
JJ Cale - Travel Log in the car
The first disc of Motorpsycho's Trust us, on the way back. One of the great albums of all time.
Massive attack - Mezzanine
Baron's Lavaca flyer radio show. I missed the start cause I couldn't get the audio to work, but I was on board for an hour and a half of great American guitar rock.
Another Belgian favorite, the second Gore Slut album, from 1998, 'Above the Lisa drugstore'. Dinosaur jr inspired lofi guitar rock fronted by ex-dEUS guitarist and painter Rudy Trouvé.

Re: NOW PLAYING.
Been listening to -
Mudhoney - March to fuzz. One disc best of and one disc rarities from their '90s output. Probably all the Mudhoney I need, but a fun couple of hours.
A Motorpsycho live show from april 18 2002, playing at the Razzmatazz 2 in Barcelona. Starting off with a wonderful 23 minute version of 'My best friend', one of my favorite songs they did.
JJ Cale - Troubadour. Great music on the road.
I'd heard a lot of Motorpsycho already, so why stop there, and we dug the 2nd disc of Trust Us late at night driving back home.
Finally listened to myself shouting 'Tikkie! Tikkie' for half an hour, trying to get our cat to come in for the night (we succeeded).

Re: NOW PLAYING.
Got the Deluxe CD of this in a charity shop for a pound - The Bryan Ferry Orchestra, Bittersweet. It is songs from the Ferry/Roxy catalogue done in a 1920s jazz style, sometimes with vocals from Ferry, sometimes instrumental only.
When I first heard of his particular project I was not impressed. He has done two albums I believe, and some film soundtrack work, including for the remake of The Great Gatsby.
Until now I have thought this an off-putting folly, but this album is really growing on me. The arrangements are excellent, and I am starting to see that the faux Jazz Age style has actually liberated some of the tunes which I thought were dreary in their original versions on the post-Avalon albums. 'Alphaville', 'Limbo', and 'New Town'. for example.
Well. What do you know?

Been listening to -
Sonic Youth - The eternal. It's kinda frustrating they ended on this decidedly minor work. It sounds transitional, but to what we'll never know.
NRBQ - Happy talk. I couldn't be happier with the way Terry has given NRBQ a new life. This is just a short EP from 2017 but it's a fine band.
A homemade compilation of mainly 7-inch singles and rarities of different noise projects involving Mauro Pawlowski from the early 2000s: Monguito, I h8 camera, Augsburger tafelconfect, Bum collar, Othin Spake, Possessed factory and so on.
Checking out some of the new records reviewed in this month's Uncut through YouTube.
Assorted radio sessions Stephen Malkmus did in 2018 promoting Sparkle Hard. American radio stations have weird abbreviations for names. These sessions were done at KUTX, KEXP and XMU - how can you even remember those?
Building a YouTube playlist with music from 1995 for a friend. It's becoming pretty unwieldy. Hmm, have to downsize it somehow...
