Stevie Wonder's most scorned song

Postby GoogaMooga » 21 Oct 2021, 05:59

Stevie Wonder's greeting-card-level ballad, "I Just Called to Say I Love You", was the surprise winner of the Academy Award for Best Song in 1984. It also shot to no. 1 in twenty countries, but hardcore fans hated it. It was later immortalized in the scene with the record store clerk's snide remark in "High Fidelity". But isn't it pretty much how we feel about the song? Something to skip, or in a live setting, an excuse to go to the bar? Personally, I don't hate it as much as some people do, I happen to think "Part-Time Lover" is worse. But "I Just Called..." remains the song with the biggest schism between the public and the critics/fans/clerks. It's the song that divides the most.

I honestly can't recall the last time I heard it.

On most of the comps, but I suppose you steered clear of those.

You need his Motown 45s in the '60s/70s, and all the '72 - '80 LPs. Cherry pick after that.

I wouldn’t buy a “comp” or any other album with it on therefore avoiding it in the first place. I find it a good policy to not buy shitty songs , it saves having to get rid of them later.

Add the 60s albums, even with the filler.

Part Time Lover isnt bad, plus its luther doing the low parts.

I just called is a bit treacle.
