If it’s a hoax it’s a very successful one as the news came from ZZ Top’s FB page and the post is still up (same for Instagram).
Harvey has been posting a link on FB about the hoax but it only mentions reports of his death from earlier in the week and says nothing about today.
I’ll stick with assuming he’s a goner.
RIP.

I'm inclined to agree, but I've been seeing the same thing on FB.

Dusty Hill, the bassist of US blues rock band ZZ Top, has died at the age of 72.
Bandmates Billy Gibbons and Frank Beard said that Hill died in his sleep at his home in Houston, Texas. They did not give further details.
Earlier in July, ZZ Top had announced that Hill would not play some upcoming shows due to a hip injury.
Hill was one of the founding members of the iconic band. He played with ZZ Top for over 50 years.
"We, along with legions of ZZ Top fans around the world, will miss your steadfast presence, your good nature, and enduring commitment to providing that monumental bottom to the 'Top'," the statement from Gibbons and Beard said.
"You will be missed greatly, amigo."
Born Joseph Michael Hill, the bassist originally played guitar alongside his brother Rocky in Dallas before moving to Houston and joining Beard.
ZZ Top was founded in 1969, and played their first live concert the following year.
The trio would go on to release 15 studio and four live albums that led to two top 10 singles, Legs and Sleeping Bag from the 1983 album Eliminator. ZZ Top was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
In addition to the bass guitar, Hill played keyboard and was a secondary lead vocalist for the band.
Hill also made cameo acting appearances in the Back to the Future Part III film and HBO's Deadwood, along with the animated television series King of the Hill.
Following news of his death, fans and fellow musicians of Hill's took to social media to express their grief.
"For 50 entire years, Dusty Hill anchored down one of the greatest rock power trios that's ever existed," music journalist Corbin Reiff wrote on Twitter.

Re: Dusty Hill RIP
well, I knew he died because of all the pictures I was seeing on Facebook.
sign of the times, I guess.
I saw ZZ Top open for Doobie Brothers & Savoy Brown in Bakersfield in the early seventies. they went on first and were all anybody was talking about as we milled out of the cute little stadium hours later.

Apparently it was his wish that they go on without him and they appear to be set to do just that!

Not meant to sound bad but all of a sudden everybody's playing ZZ Top albums. They've been neglected by most all these years.

They are beloved figures of American pop culture from the 80s. It’s easy to forget how omnipresent they were back then. It’s natural that even non-record people would feel this loss, even though Dusty Hill was, as a person, almost totally opaque and unknown. As a character, he’s recognized instantly all over the world.

Very true
That's to be expected though Yves. It nearly always happens - it ignites something in some folks that might've just dabbled in the past.
Not like us all old hands me old mucker!
The CDs, which are cheap at the moment, will undoubtedly increase in price too

seldom happens, you know. but the vinyl probably will.
vinyl: poison for the young and old alike. pay five times more for black, seven times more for coloured, nine times more for splattered.

I was watching MTV back then and those videos were inescapable as most here know. Having been a fan since the second album I was disappointed in their choices but as the story goes the band “gots to be paid” and I get why they did it. I only saw them once on the La Grange tour but that was enough. The ultimate bar band.
