Is it just me, or does this track lean a bit more towards 'filler' than in the direction of 'blowout finale to a terrific album'?

Don't mean to be a wet blanket.

Think it depends very much more on my mood than the rest of the songs - there are times when it seems absolutely amazing, the players are really into describing the dual, and other times when I've not got into it that much and sections seem overblown. Perhaps it would have been better as the penultimate track.

To give them their due, putting this stuff together must have been hellish.

There is a very fine line between virtuoso and full of music on the one hand and self-indulgent and full of hubbard on the other...

Prefer Weather Report and Mahavishnu to RTF and tend to reach for them - or nowadays some Jean Luc Ponty - when I'm in the mood.

Where McLaughlin fell for a few silly orchestral trappings, Corea essays pompous, ersatz-classical compositions--while continuing to display Al DiMeola, Stanley Clarke, and Lenny White in all their dazzling vacuity. Jazz-rock's answer to Emerson, Lake & Palmer--the worst of both worlds. D+ "

Sorry I missed all that Jazz. Kind of pre-occupied. Romantic Warrior is the first RtF album I ever heard and I liked it. But upon re-listening I must agree to a certain extent with that Mr. Christgau. It's all a bit pompous. I wouldn't quite compare to ELP because that's the absolute bottom of the barrel of pomposity, but he's not all wrong. I prefer No Mystery. Fresher and less pretentious. And a big shout-out to Latin-Chick! Light as a feather on the 2nd album sounds great to me, as does the entire Captain Marvel. It's a Stan Getz album but several RtF alumni play on it and I think most songs were composed by Corea.
