Mojo Top 100 - 1995

Postby robertff » 11 Jan 2021, 15:48

In August 1995 contributors to Mojo magazine published their top 100 albums of all time. I seem to recall that sometime after Mojo then asked their readership to submit their own top 25 favourite albums in order to compile a definitive readers’ list of top 100 albums.

Looking through some old scrapbooks the other day I came across the 25 that I considered to be my favourite albums at the time. I thought it interesting that, all in all, quite a few of these would still be in my top 25 list, with perhaps a number of changes but certainly not a momentus number. Also, I would always want to have these albums as I continue to play them all fairly regularly. I make no excuses for two or three choices from one artist/group, probably be the same if I was doing this today and I make no apologies for my list.

There have been many excellent records produced since then (1995) but I thought it surprising that few, if any, would creep into that top 25. Other albums from before 1995 might do so, something to do with formative years and the great importance popular music held for me thereafter I guess - until it didn’t.

Any of you take part in that poll and can you remember what your top 25 were, if so why not share them?

So here’s my Mojo list from 1995, 1-25 top to bottom, nothing really out of the usual:

1. Rolling Stones - Aftermath
2. Beatles - Revolver
3. Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed
4. Beatles - Abbey Road
5. The Who - A Quick One
6. The Who - Who’s Next
7. The Doors - The Doors
8. Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
9. Traffic - The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys
10. David Bowie - Hunky Dory
11. Beatles - White Album
12. Traffic - Where The Eagle Flies
13. John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers - Bare Wires
14. David Bowie - The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust
15. The Doors - Morrison Hotel
16. Fairport Convention - Liege and Lief
17. Eagles - On The Border
18. Jethro Tull - Stand Up
19. The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses
20, Crosby Stills and Nash - Crosby, Stills and Nash (1969)
21. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II
22. Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells A Story
23. Lou Reed - Transformer
24. Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac (1975)
25. Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland

I can’t remember if I did or didn’t, but I expect I did, having been a subscriber since issue 1.

I like the look of your list, though and unsurprisingly, I do own most of them.

I doubt that I did the 25. I only own 7 of that list, although I have heard the vast majority.

There are eight by the Beatles, Stones and Bowie. You don't have all of them?

I have 11, but do not think I have heard all of any of the others.

And I didn't do a 25. However I can think of a couple of post 95 albums I would put in my top 25 now.

I only own a couple of early Stones compilations. For some reason, although I grew up with them, I only own Beatles 67-70 and Sgt Pepper. I do have the Bowie albums.

:) that really is fascinating.

Though I suppose I only acquired all the beatles when the remastered set came out, and the stones albums up to '71 when a vinyl set came out.

I think I may have just started reading Mojo sometime around then. I didn't send a list, but I presume the usual suspects would've been there if I had - of your list (of which I own all but the Eagles and Stone Roses) certainly Sticky Fingers, Revolver (my #1 then and now) and the White Album, and maybe Electric Ladyland as well.

Add the Velvets, Highway 61, Piper, Please to See the King, Pet Sounds, etc., and you'd have the basis for my list - then or now.

The only record I can think of that would be there now that wouldn't have then is Parachute, or maybe Millennium Begin. Other than that, I doubt it would've changed much in 25 years.

I don't know whether that's a good or bad thing.

I was DEFINITELY not reading Mojo in 1995.
Option, CMJ, Alternative Press (maybe), Spin, and god knows what punky fanzines and the like. But no expensive British Oldies mags.

Not even one...!

No, that's a good list Rob many of those would be on my top 25 list now.

A bit too much Stones and Beatles though for my taste.

I have all the albums on the list with the exception of one [and it's not The Stone Roses].

I can recall doing a list and it wouldn't be any different now to 1995 - nor 1985 nor 1975....! [except one!]

I can't remember the order (and I would have struggled at the time too) but in no particular order and strictly one album per band/artist:

1. Hot Rats - Frank Zappa
2. The Land of Grey & Pink - Caravan
3. Mirage - Camel
4. Thick as a Brick - Jethro Tull
5. After the Goldrush - Neil Young
6. Live at the Fillmore - Allman Brothers
7. The Yes Album - Yes
8. Pronounced - Lynyrd Skynyrd
9. Third - Soft Machine
10. Space Ritual - Hawkwind
11. Autobahn - Kraftwerk
12. Phaedra - Tangerine Dream
13. Full House - Fairport Convention
14. Wheels of Fire - Cream
15. Larks' Tongues in Aspic - King Crimson
16. Blues from Laurel Canyon - John Mayall
17. Trout Mask Replica - Captain Beefheart
18. Abraxas - Santana
19. Four-Way Street - CSN&Y
20. The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys - Traffic
21. Thank Christ - Groundhogs
22. Paranoid - Black Sabbath
23. Deep Purple - Deep Purple
24. Natucket Sleighride - Mountain
25. Doolittle - Pixies

A most robust list there, C. And some food for thought for me to check out as well. The only John Mayall I own is the Beano album, but you and Rob rate him highly enough for your 25. Interesting.

The lad made some very strong albums

The Turning Point, Bare Wires and Laurel Canyon are essential

I rate these two very highly as well, in fact the least interesting one for me out of this 60's batch is the Beano one with Eric. He was finding his feet with the Beano one but most definitely found them with what followed.

As you know C. Laurel Canyon is my favourite and it would change places with Bare Wires now on my list but Bare Wires would still be right up there.

These are 'definites' that I would want to squeeze in to my top 25

Agreed - it's hyped because of Clapton.

I rate these two highly also:

Had to look that up - you must be older than me, never heard of it.

I'm 55, but it crops up on Radio 4 Extra from time to time.
