Question for those who already have the CD set, are the covers replicas of the originals, gatefolds where they were gatefolds, inserts etc?

I have Japanese replicas of some of these albums already (Kiln House, Future Games, Bare Trees, Mystery To Me) which have gatefolds and inner sleeves, textured covers etc. so can compare when I receive this new set, but I can't imagine they will be anything like the same quality as the Japanese ones given the relatively cheap price of the boxset.

Got mine yesterday, I believe they are replicas, some are gatefolds and some have inserts.

They certainly do. My Japanese replicas of Bowie albums make the ones that come in the recent boxsets look cheap in comparison.

One thing I hope might happen as a result of this set (though I won't hold my breath) is a widespread reassessment of Kiln House.

I get the impression that Future Games, Bare Trees and Mystery To Me have by now more or less taken their rightful places in the FM pantheon, at least among those fans who even know of their existence. But Kiln House was always in a tough spot because it was the first album without Green, and because with Spencer leaving and Welch and Mrs. McVie joining immediately after there was never a "follow-up". As I said on Baron's great long-lost thread on this era, it was a "transitional album" that didn't actually get to transition to anything.

But screw all that - it's a unique and beautiful album in its own right. Jeremy Spencer never sounded more like an actual Member Of Fleetwood Mac (previously he'd often seemed more like a Special Guest - he isn't even on Then Play On, aside from the gatefold photo), and while that could have turned out badly, it didn't, not at all. For that matter, Danny Kirwan sounds more open and engaged with his bandmates - even sharing lead vocals/writing credits on two or three songs. Mick & John are their usual sweet reliable selves, and then you have a crucial soupçon of pixie dust from an uncredited Christine.

By my lights there's not one sub-par cut - even their version of Joe Turner's "Honey Hush", a much-recorded song I've never otherwise liked much, is a delight (the Mac call it "Hi Ho Silver") - and for all its variety the album hangs together shockingly well.

From that era of longhairs "getting it together in the country," here's a relatively rare example of it actually working. Dig it.

Station Man and Jewel Eyed Judy are the stand outs on Kiln House for me, whole album is great tho. The Buckingham Nicks Mac did a great version of Station Man live in 75.

BTW, I wonder if it's coincidence that this set was released 50 years, to the month, after Kiln House was first released. (Which makes me wonder in turn if Then Play On was a late addition to the set.)

I'm playing the live disc now, and there's plenty there for aficionados of Bob Welch as Awkward Rock Star. He does this RIDICULOUS rap session over "Future Games" and I tuned out of what was probably even sillier goings on in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle song.

I'll probably start a new version of my old thread pretty soon. There's a few of these I've never really owned and only streamed, so I reckon I'll be digging in.
