Hello! Bought a Sam Cooke set from Not Now, a European (UK?) reissue label. Says remastered but not by whom. Hard to tell with something as old as Sam Cooke, but I don't think it's a needle drop. Set has some rare albums, so I'm keeping it either way. Can anyone confirm the mastering source?

That's a question for the Hoffman forum.
I think this label typically works from previously-released CDs.

There is endless debate and misunderstanding about such labels.
As I understand it, a release such as this is manufactured and sold without licensing the material, but by obtaining a source - CD, LP, tapes of the album derived from an official source, or low bitrate MP3 copies of the album (you read that right...).
Because the issuer has deemed the material to be out of copyright, they argue they do not need to license what they issue. However, because they operate legally they are required to pay publishing/performance fees as appropriate.
Such labels are often unduly called 'pirates' or 'bootleggers', but the difference is that they issue material they have determined they have a legal right to release, and they then pay all required fees just as any other label would do.
Some critics say 'but labels like this don't make sufficient effort to pay the legally required royalties for the material they sell!'
To which I reply 'hmmmmmmm...' - I wonder where they got that idea from?

Unless you are a conscientious consumer who wants to make sure as much as possible that when buying music you are certain the artist who made it has their legal rights respected (and morally we should be, really), then the issue is whether or not you can expect a release on the label to be of optimum sound quality, as they promise.
From experience, and reading that of others, I would say 'Not Really'.

Re: Not Now CD reissue label
As I suspected, Not Now is one to avoid. However, seeing as they offer two unreleased albums, I'll make an exception here with the Sam Cooke set.

I totally agree with LMG's explanation.
Most of those releases are old or compiled from other sources.
But I can't imagine that some (certain Presleys, Miles Davis, Beach Boys, 10CC) haven't had a renewed copyright by the original owners.
On the other hand, Angel Air Records does it this way:
The quality is often not 100% and mostly consist of live recordings or stuff that didn't make an official release.

Since 1997 we have worked closely with bands and artistes to compile a varied and extensive catalogue of releases from the 60's to date. There are re-issues of historic classic albums, previously forgotten gems and some new releases from familiar talented bands and artistes. All releases are carefully compiled, remastered to enhance with informative booklets/photos (cds).
