RIP: Q Magazine

I suspect that like a few guys on here I bought Q from the off. I picked it up (very) intermittently after around no 220 but the decline was more than noticeable even then. Thinking about it, I never really loved it as I did say,Mojo, The Word or Uncut but I'm sorry to see it go.

I'm still a sucker fora good music magazine but I think we're a dying breed.

It never shook the aura of being something that Paul Gambaccini read - a sort of cloying, middle of the road sensibility, like a young man in chinos taking a "toke" on a "reefer" at a party, spewing down the toilet 30 minutes later and then being driven home by his mum. Or perhaps being the choice of music monthly for Alan Partridge.

I bought it religiously for many years from 80s and throughout the 90s but at the latter end of the 90s it certainly became much less essential and by 2000 I stopped altogether when I realised it had become too far removed from what I enjoyed in music. I always loved the big review section but as time wore on it was full of reviews I simply could not connect with any longer (terrible reviews for albums I loved and rave reviews for stuff I thought mediocre etc.).

In its heyday it was certainly a good read and most copies got read cover to cover.

And I think it was 100% people from the Mojo boards, wasn't it? Who was from Q?

Bought Q for a while but then it became so far removed from the music I was interested in and more of a teen mag that I dropped it. Bought Uncut for a while alongside MOJO but dropped that as well fairly soon after and then dropped buying MOJO when it bacame Q.

Now I only buy Record Collector.

Only bought a few, if there was a good interview. But I did borrow it from the library for a few years, to check the reviews. Somehow they managed to write a witty caption for every piccie. Okay, they weren't always funny, but that was a helluva lot of clever captions to write. Every issue!

There was a propaganda initiative directed towards the Q board. Some of the other Doyens questioned the wisdom of this, but as was rightly pointed out, in the far-flung future few will remember which board first nurtured us.

I only get Mojo as I'm frankly too lazy to stop the subscription, and there's a part of me that still enjoys the connection it brings me to a different era when magazines mattered. That said, I mainly do the crossword and just browse the rest. I'm assuming it's only a matter of time before Mojo goes as well.

Only ever read a handful of issues of Q - I preferred Vox back in the day - but I attended a few of their in-person interview events/gigs that they put together at the Tate which I thought were very well done.

I think I first bought a Q magazine whe,n I was waiting for the ferry in Dover and because it had Bob Dylan on the cover.

Soon discovered there were far better.

Now it's only Record Collector and Uncut.

Remember finding the first issue on sale at the WHS bookstall on Cambridge railway station in 86 (September-ish?). Was impressed enough to buy it, and subsequently to continue buying the magazine for years. For a while it was cover to cover reading, but both it and I drifted away in different directions. Stopped buying every issue quite a while before I stopped altogether.
If memory serves I first decided to stop buying it every month when they featured an unclothed Terence Trent Darby on the cover (FFS!!!!), except my wife volunteered to buy that issue for me herself(!).

I haven't bought a music mag for years. I subscribed to Prog Magazine for a while and that's a pretty good niche magazine but I found there wasn't enough of interest to me to warrant buying it so let my subscription lapse. I guess I'm just not Proggy enough.
