Why was Keith Tippett, a King Crimson man, involved with Soft Machine. How did this come to pass?

Ah. He was at college with the pre-softs Elton Dean, and then had a huge band called Centipede with various Softs and Crimsoids.

Got it.

I choose not to believe it.

Anyway, what you really need is a fretless bass.

And a mandolin.

i used to have a mandolin, dammit. mwhaha. gave it to a friend. her housee burnt down.

a fretless bass sounds good, though, i must admit. my dad had a standing bass. and a trombone. he used to play wayyy back when

This is an intense album in places - so much so that when it gets close to the verge it changes direction.

Challenging but an absolute delight

One of Keith's compositions - years before his time.

Roy Babbington (again a Softs man is a master)

See what I mean about then intensity - at the point it hurts it changes direction and provides relief.

very clever!

Go Roy! (bass) and Nick (trombone)

I think this album contains five Softs members at some stage.

Nick Evans' trombone reminds me of Tom Fowler's in Zappa's band circa Grand Wazoo

Tippett didn't play piano like other pianists - just listen to Crimso's Cat Food solo!

Apparently, Keith turned down Fripp when asked to join the band as a full member.

That would have been interesting...

Great trombone!

Stopped nodding the head but a slightly goofy smile remains.

Now a bit of nodding can resume. Now things are starting to cook, fruity rasping underlaid by a great bass and drums, piano adding great little flourishes.. the song really builds, ebbs and flows, really starts to cook.

Every solo of Keith's is just magic!

Organised cacophony!

VERY well recorded this album so far.

Engineered by David Voyde, in-house engineer for the Fontana label, who recorded nearly all the label's non-US jazz output during the late 60s and early 70s as well as Alex Harvey and …. wait for it C: ... Magna Carta.

Tis a small prog world. Yes, it is a small world, the world of prog.

He was married to Julie Driscoll (Wheels on Fire) and became Tippetts (notice the 's')

Tippetts was Keith birth surname but he later dropped the 's' but Jules took it

They were married and together for 50 years! That's some feat
