This Led Zeppelin convert has now listened to Mothership

Postby GoogaMooga » 13 Feb 2020, 06:59

Hello! Yes, the story continues, I am now getting deeper into my (re)discovery of Led Zeppelin. Picked up a lovely 2CD/1DVD digi-gatefold retrospective called Mothership for a mere 33 pence, and while I was quite familiar with the stuff on disc one, it was disc two, the later stuff, that really made me prick up my ears. Seems this band maintained a high standard throughout. How could I be so wrong about such a great band. I am even beginning to like Plant's high-pitched wailing. Yes, it is all good stuff.

disc two:

Disc: 2
1. The Song Remains The Same
2. Over The Hills And Far Away
3. D'yer Mak'er
4. No Quarter
5. Trampled Under Foot
6. Houses Of The Holy
7. Kashmir
8. Nobody's Fault But Mine
9. Achilles Last Stand
10. In The Evening
11. All My Love

Never too late to finally ‘get’ one of Rock’s finest bands, GM.

That was an amazing price you scored there, but you may well find yourself picking up the albums before long.

It will be well worth it.

Yes, but start from the beginning not the end.

Yes, I also got the fourth one (symbols) for 33 p, and II for 30-50 p. Although I have stopped writing "Thrift shop scores" here on BCB, I still make the rounds. ;)

I did own the symbols album on vinyl in my teens, but then I went off the band until just recently.

Yes, the end, was the end, unfortunately.

It’s not that In Through The Out Door wasn’t good, but it certainly wasn’t great, either.

And average just wasn’t good enough for Led Zeppelin.

Yeah, even non-fans know that the last one is below par.

Forget about a compilation, just get all the albums.

This one was done twice, to get it right, with Page's involvement. I also have another one, forget which one. I bought this one just as much for the DVD. I know I am going to end up getting the lot, that's my nature.

If you know you're going to get them all, don't waste money on comps.

Common sense.

Wow, you call 33 pence "money". You must be very frugal. I don't think it's a waste when I also get a concert DVD. At 30-50 pence second hand (but mint), I'll happily pick up comps for exclusives or stray tracks.

Googa, you did not say in your initial post how much you paid for the comp, and I'm certainly not a mind reader. I barely know what I'm thinking most of the time...

I did write "a mere 33 pence", so you must have missed it. I can follow you, though, at full price I am very picky with what I buy. Things I know will turn up in thrift I can wait for.

Especially if he can get the Echoes comp for 33 pence.

The fact that Jimmy was involved sadly doesn't mean, these days, that's it's been done properly.

You've clearly never heard the remastered "The Song Remains The Same" album - where there was such a focus on 'finished piece' that someone forgot to include the missing half beat of the improv section - thereby rendering the whole song completely and utterly disjointed from that note onwards. And, yeah, that was Jimmy Page too (that time with Kevin Shirley, "Mothership" was remastered by John CF Davis, by the way - with Jimmy's 'involvement/meddling') to, erm, 'get it right'.

There are many other monstrosities around Zep rehashes I could allude too - sometimes Jimmy got it right. Often he didn't. In essence, Jimmy's ears are a bit 'shot' and the mass of any remastering falls heavily into others laps - some just don't 'get it'.

Thanks for the info. I just gave Mothership one spin at low volume and had it playing in the background while I was doing other things, so I did not hear the compression clearly. Now that I have got a couple of album remasters, I can do an A/B if necessary, but I'll still keep Mothership for the DVD.

It's a shame when major bands' releases get remastered so badly, the Who is another one that comes to mind.
