2019 top tunes No. 2: Fat White Family

Postby Rorschach » 23 Jan 2020, 13:38

Seeing as the last one is going so well, here's another top tune from last year.

I reckon Fat White Family's album, Serf's Up probably works best if you're on the kind of drugs I don't take any more. For those who aren't familiar with them, they're very drone/trance/monotony/drugged up to the eyeballs type of music.
Mojo's choice for the standout track was, Tastes Good With the Money, which sounds to me like The Glitter Band on Mogadon, with David Berman out of Silver Jews and Purple Mountains on vocals. So, yes, it's terrific, but this is my favourite off the album (video NSFW):

By the way, their 2016 album, Songs for our Mothers, had this track, Tinfoil Deathstar. What do the Prog Goons think of this? Sounds like pure space rock to me:

Bugger off.

Absolutely mental live as well - saw them just before Christmas and they absolutely destroyed EartH (and didn't even play Tastes Good with The Money). Agree, Feet is the highlight.

Think these threads should just be clubbed into a "best of 2019" thread which I don't think we ever had this year.

There was a best albums thread but it died quickly.

My idea was to have space to discuss individual bands, albums or songs but I get the feeling that's not going to happen so you're probably right.

I'll look into making one thread when I have a bit more time.

Very envious you saw them live. I shall keep an eye open for them.

But is it prog lad...?

I enjoyed the track - very pleasant. Not the sort of thing I generally listen to but robust enough.

Try it - see how it goes.

It always takes a while to establish a 'reoccurring' thread focus.

Further, it depends on the song, album or band though.

Eg Mogul Thrash would only attract the goons.....

Well, we all have different ideas of what prog is...
Tinfoil Deathstar reminded me a bit of Hawkwind.

I'd be perfectly happy for the prog goons to turn up just say they think whatever I've posted is crap. Especially if they were to say why they think that.

I like the fact that they slow things down, play it real dirty - remind me of the best of the Birthday Party in that sense.

Not to rub it in but I saw them twice last year actually because i caught them at All Points East as well, complete with Baxter Dury guest appearance.

I'm afraid it's the second Youtube video on the original post. I'm sure it sounds nowt like Hawkwind to a true believer.

But I insist that it is space rock! Wouldn't have been out of place in UFO in 1967.

He does the vocals on Tastes Good With the Money, right?

I'm not too familiar with the Birthday Party but I can imagine.

I never heard of Fat White Family. Thanks for starting this thread! Funny, I played the first video without reading the opening post and my first thought was that they sort of reminded me of The Silver Jews. R.I.P. David Berman.

Nice thread by the way.

One of my favourite albums of last year. Original, inventive, in your face brilliance at times, you play it once and then start all over again

Is that with, or without drugs?

The first time I listened to it all the way through was while I was walking around doing stuff and I found it a bit TOO monotonous.
It's grown on me since but I can't help wishing I was stoned...

My pleasure.

There'll be more of David Berman in a later thread.

One thing I find excruciating with Taste Good With the Money is that the chorus reminds me so much of Baddiel/Skinner's Three Lions, and I can't hear it without singing that over the top.

Exeter-based comic artist superstar Shaky Kane did some designs for them...
