Aretha Franklin - best album?
Other than her ‘greatest hits’, I don’t know Arethas music very well.
So I’m looking for a recommendation: Especially for her more overtly gospel stuff.

Has to be 'I Never Loved A Man....' or 'Lady Soul' I would say, both fantastic albums. There are a number of other very worthy albums but hard to beat either of those.

If it's gospel, you'll need Amazing Grace (2CD)

To wit: Spirit In the Dark, and Young, Gifted and Black.
And googa is right about the actual gospel. Get the double cd version of Amazing Grace and watch the film if you haven’t already.
For whatever reason, I’ve never owned Aretha Arrives or Aretha Now, but those could be great too.

All of the above recommendations are good. Hell, the Atlantic albums box is 19 discs and it's only a little over fifty bucks on amazon.

Both the above very much worth having.

Aretha Now could be my favorite, her "Say a Little Prayer" is better than Dionne Warwick's.

Blimey! That seems like a bargain. If I didn't already have Spotify ...

This... if you're a hopeless hoarder and completist like me
but the albums picked for the 5 Originals set would do nicely I think.

Spirit in the Dark is my go-to since The Baron drew my attention to it a few years ago.

The hell it is. I love Aretha but she sure overdid it sometimes and that's Exhibit A right there.

I'll be the first to agree that Aretha sometimes overdoes it, but not here, she just makes it more zestful.

And I love this - this is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for.
Many thanks!

Re: Aretha Franklin - best album?
You can't go wrong with any of the albums mentioned in this thread (so far). Spirit In The Dark is superb, no doubt. I don't have one title that I feel is above the others as far as those early Atlantic recordings. It comes down to mood and when I heard it last.

Spirit in the Dark is my favourite of the ones in the 5 CD set I think - but all the disks are good/great.
Possibly time to research that 19 disk set....
