The slinkiest, most sinewy lead guitar solo I have ever heard

Postby GoogaMooga » 05 Jan 2020, 09:19

Ernie Isley, never bettered:

"That Lady" - Isley Brothers (1973)
Inspired by Santana, who in turn covered it in 1990.

"When the desert comes, people will be sad; just as Cannery Row was sad when all the pilchards were caught and canned and eaten." - John Steinbeck

I am not sure what 'slinky' and 'sinewy' mean in a musical context but this always comes to mind when thinking about special guitar solos

Yeah, it’s incredible, but I think I prefer the solo on Summer Breeze, also from the 3+3 album.

I thought of John Cipollina when I read the thread title, but I sure love the guitar in that Isley Bros song.

I think I get what he means and the Isley Brothers track is a good example (and the Zappa one too). I'm sure I can think of others if I put my mind to it.

Sinewy usually reminds me of Adrian Belew, also scrunchy and scratchy....

I'm also reminded of the solo in Talking Heads' Drugs....

It is a magical song, and a magnificent solo by Ernie. His inspiration was more Hendrix though, as he has stated in the past, at least for a tune like this one.

Here, here's an interesting read about the man, the Isleys and that song...

Surely, a runner-up.

Things that a fella can't forget...
