The album that got you started

Postby Jimbo » 31 Dec 2019, 16:41

Of course before any album was AM radio with single songs but the album which got me hooked on albums was this:

Brass rock at it's finest. From there it was BS&T, Chicago, Sons of Champlin, Buddy Miles Express because Buddy was the Flag's drummer. Just saying to my kid tonight how my generation not only liked the singers but we knew who was in the band, who produced the album, who photographed the cover and from there we became their fans.
Question authority.

UK version, it would have been Aftermath but my sister beat me to it, so I bought this one instead. Loved everything about it, the front cover image, the back cover ramblings of Andrew Loog Oldham and of course the music - the first three tracks on side one are among the best first three tracks ever. And of course, as you said, knew everyone in the band, knew all the words in no time but that was pretty easy to do when you only had one LP. Never bought singles, only LPs throughout my life.

I don't have a first album, but I bought a first batch of albums in New York in the summer of 1975. Among them was Slade in Flame. They were my first favorite band, and I knew I had to go the album route. Bought more LPs than singles right from the git go.

Can't remember the order, but these are the first three albums I bought. I stand by them today.

Featuring, believe it or not, Jim Gordon on the drums.

He was recording in the late '30s and early '40s?

Air Conditioning, by Curved Air. Purchased on September 18th, 1970.

This is the opening track, It Happened Today, which still gives me the chills:

It's actually a double cassette tape...got this from my dad when I was 6 year old. Apparently I was singing several if these songs when they were played on radio.

First album I bought 3 years later...

Magical Mystery Tour.
I got the MONO because I could afford it. Somebody nice sported me the difference so I could exchange it for the stereo.
over the years I've been told this was a mistake but I still don't see it that way. I had a record player with stereo speakers so stereo seemed like an upgrade.

I honestly can't remember what my first album was. It would have been in the early '70s - and it was probably an Osmonds record or something like that. It would be much easier to tell you what the first album from any band or artist I purchased was rather than my first LP proper.

My older brothers had LPs as well as 45s, so it was never a "first it was that, then it was this" deal with me. The first LP I owned was The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees, a gift from my best friend (and his dad) for my third birthday (my eldest brother had the first four Monkees albums). I'm pretty sure the first one that was bought for me per my request was Barabajagal, and the first I saved up my allowance to get was Sgt. Pepper.

Bought the day after watching them on Top Of The Pops playing Cherry Red. I wagged off school and went to HMV in Manchester to buy Split.
