I think he's comfortable in his own skin as he knows his limitations. In Roxy, he's fine ....imaginative, controlled etc, but not particularly versatile.

Well, I recently listened to Diamond Head. I think it’s great we have a Manzanera thread but a shame that most of what’s said is that he’s unremarkable. There are many bitchen’ guitar solos on Diamond Head. Unremarkable my ass!

Maybe not.

I might be misremembering, but just after he played on John Cale's 'Fear', an interviewer pointed out that what he was doing on that record was much wilder than what he played with Roxy. He agreed and said he appreciated the freedom to do whatever he wanted with Cale, which he didn't have with Roxy Music.
Bugger off.

He doesn't have a trademark sound like a Hendrix or Santana say, but i really like PMs playing throughout Roxy's career, and especially later around the Flesh and Blood period. Everything he plays suits the song wonderfully, from the chiming rock and roll sound on 'Over You' to the choppier disco funk of 'Same Old Scene'. I'd say he was extremely versatile, playing many different styles depending on what suited the songs; it means he's not really your traditional guitar hero now, but his playing seems very influencial now when consider the art rock or post rock bands that followed in Roxy's wake.

So who would you say was obviously influenced by him?

I agree with you - I think he is very versatile.
I think that versatility is what leads to him not having a signature sound

My CAT has a signature sound around 5 AM any morning.
I love my cat but I’m not planning to buy any of her records.

Charlie Burchill from Simple Minds was very much so, and Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead too.

Neither of them really sound like him though do they?
CB's sound - certainly back in the day when they were worth a wank - was not a million miles from the contemporary Mcgeoch/Edge/Sargent thing
JG's is more a post grunge thing
I have no doubt that both were influenced by Roxy - and maybe him in particular - but they don't sound like they were

Yeah, you're probably right; in Roxy's early years PM's tone and sound is quite glam-rocky compared to Burchill's post-punk sound, but i'm absolutely convinced from being a life-long fan of both bands that PM was a big influence on the way CB played, and the role the guitar played within SM's music.

I like Charlie Burchill's work - certainly in the first half of the 80s. I'm not interested in the later era so much.
But things like Up On The Catwalk, which is simultaneously both vainglorious rockism and delightful liquid - it sounds like a massive waterfall - expressionism, are genius. Though it doesn't end up sounding like it, there is something of Amazona in it.
