"Skutan" - Swedish original or Danish cover?

Postby GoogaMooga » 10 Nov 2019, 20:39

"Skutan" is an important sea shanty in Swedish (and Danish) culture. It's getting rubbished in the Folk cup. If pressed, which do you prefer, the Swedish original by Evert Taube or the Danish cover by Otto Brandenburg?

Evert Taube's original:

Otto Brandenburg's cover:
"When the desert comes, people will be sad; just as Cannery Row was sad when all the pilchards were caught and canned and eaten." - John Steinbeck

Unfortunately Otto Brandenburg's version is not available in my country. However if it has the saccharine orchestration used in Evert Taube's version this may be no bad thing.

Suspect I'd prefer this version over either.

The two Googa posted are both really horribly arranged, very schmaltzy and reeking of Danish Blue. (*Note - embarrassing lack of awareness of scandinavian cheese types makes this less funny than it should've sounded)

That last one is better. Definitely.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

This is the kind of question that keeps me awake, nights.
