Well, I've never been a massive Smiths fan, more of a casual repeated listener to a handful of tunes, but I think ignoring his entire solo career is fairly safe. Admittedly, you lose Suedehead and Every Day is Like Sunday, but that's about it. Just look at it that as a collective, The Smiths weren't a bunch of virulent racists, so you're on quite safe ground. I do think it's quite funny that the man the ultra-politically correct NME and Melody Maker staked all their chips on turned out to be Alf Garnett. And his solo music is largely as pathetic as his views.

I generally draw a line when celebrities either become as annoying as Sting or paedophiles. I wouldn't have him round for tea and I've stopped sending christmas cards but he is the most important person to grace the British music scene in the last 35 years.

But it was fifteen years ago, and much as I love the Smiths, he hasn't done anything good since You are the Quarry. Live, he was rubbish the last time I saw him. I used to find him hilarious, but like every single right-wing person ever, he is not funny now. The first book was great, but the second made you worry deeply about his mental health. Life is too short to listen to racists. I didn't buy the last record and haven't unwrapped the one before that from its packaging. I wish Ryan Adams recuperation would hurry up and get started, and feel bemused by the villification of Michael Jackson, but Morrissey is dead to me.

You Are The Quarry was as far as I went with Morrissey, so I can't comment on anything post that. But I played YATQ yesterday and it remains a very good record. Other than the BBC, I don't really follow the news that much, so I generally don't read about his rants and rages either. So he can be as big a twat as he likes, but If the music's good, then I'm going to listen to it. Similarly, my wife and I have no problem listening to Michael Jackson. He was never found guilty of anything. I suppose you could say the same about Jimmy Savile, but the weight of evidence against him was overwhelming. I really think Michael Jackson's family would have disowned him had they felt the same.

Someone sent me pictures of miles of empty rows at his recent gig in NJ. Someone else said the staff was giving away Moz tickets at that venue when he saw Bryan Ferry there a week before.

But the Hollywood bowl was probably well attended. Maybe a Mexican audience just takes it for granted that a white entertainer is prejudiced against them.

The $300 signed albums by other artists are awesome. People who bought them will be glad they did.
