The Big Three:

Larks' Tongues In Aspic.
Starless & Bible Black.
Red.

Of the Big 3, which album is your favourite?
Is Starless the best song, or would you go for something else?
Is this your favourite era of King Crimson? A different Big 3?

If we are talking consecutive 'Big 3' then this is the Big 3...!

I love them all but of the three I will always go for Larks' Tongues.

I know Red is going to win the poll - I am convinced of it but for me it the least strong of the three.

They split after that said platter and came back as soemthing that wasn't to my taste

I’m sure you’re right, but I’m going to give all three a careful listen to see if I’ve changed my mind.

I went with Red because, well, Carlsson told me to.
But they're all great of course.

I probably still like their first LP the best though.

not me. I mean, I love it but not like I love those three.
throw up the three sided coin. they've ALL been my favorites at different times.
"starless" seems the least at first blush but both sides are really strong and it's got "Fracture" on it!

Geez, that's right. "Fracture" could be their best song from that era.

I haven't listened to any of them for a while but always preferred the first two Crimson albums. I''ll have to give them all another listen but Starless has got the best cover.

Red is the best of these three, although love all three. I would take Larks second. Each album has one of KC's best - Exiles, Starless and Fracture.

The KC first two albums would also be high on the list along with the first new KC lineup Discipline and of course a bunch of live albums.

I can break all three LPs down to three tracks each:
Larks Tongues - "Exiles," "Easy Money," "Larks Tongues pt 2"
Starless - "The Great Deceiver," "Lament, "Fracture"
Red - "Red," "One More Red Nightmare," "Starless"

While all three albums are essential Crimson, those nine songs encapsulate, for me, what made them great.

This is a great example of changing tastes. Back "in the day" when I first heard these (circa 1978?), these three were not considered the obvious Big Three at all. Red was deleted in the US (had to seek it out on import, which I still have), and the other two weren't exactly considered all that brilliant either. I think Rolling Stone Record Guide (for what it's worth) gave them both three stars out of five. It was the debut that was considered The One, and it was vaguely downhill from there. Is this anybody else's memory too?

But -- I always liked these three a whole lot, and probably the best. So, the world finally came around to what I knew all along! (BTW, I do adore the first two, and quite like Lizard and Islands too.)

I think Red is absolutely the best, a perfect album, a great mix of excellent studio recording, great songs, great melodies, but still aggressive and weird. What a high point to go out on! But it's a bit sad they did, because they on such a roll and Ian McDonald was reputedly set to rejoin the band. (Instead we got Foreigner!)

The other two are almost as good. LTIA is a little rickety but intense, while SABB is a bit smoother and tougher but also more (I don't know) detached? It blew my mind when I realized that most of the album was based on live tracks. I had known they were supposed to be good live, but that's phenomenal. I've been on a bit of a SABB kick last couple years.

Though they're all great, I guess I would rate them in this order:
Red
Starless
Larks' Tongues
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

And is no one going to mention USA? To me, that's the one they went out on.

USA was a posthumous release. Recorded before Red released after they split.

I don't like any one of them more than the others
They all have their highlights and they all have horrible vocal selections.

If I had to pick one I'd probably go with LTIA, but it is only because in the two part title track and Talking Drum, it has the most great stuff.
Starless has Fracture and Red the title track....but LTIA has more
Complete Ramones Mp3 set on its way

A superb album - particularly after it was released in extended form and with David Cross' violin on Starless

Similar but different. On Radio I agree. On LA FM in the seventies “In the Court of the Crimson King” was the one and only Crimson track that got “rotated” on L.A.Radio. You’d hear “Shchizoid Man” now and then but nothing like ITCOTCK. Local station KNAC played more prog than most before they went Metal. Still, you’d hear scattered tracks and mostly late at night.

Record collections were another matter. I’d flip through people’s stacks when i went to their houses and I’d often see “Poseidon” and “Lizard” when I did. “Islands” I only saw in used record stores. I saw KC on “Midnight Special” when “Larks Tongues..” was new and I thought they kicked ass.

A friend’s older brother was giving us a ride after school. “We just got the new King Crimson” they announced. “Is it good?” I asked from the back seat. My friend’s brother and the guy on the passenger seat both turned around and looked at me like I was some kind of idiot. “Uh, YEAH!” They said. that ride is when I heard side one for the first time.

the album was easy to find at the store - they were a “name” band. My Dad shot up off the sofa one day at the screeching end of “Taking Drum” and marched to the turntable. He yanked the tone arm of the record, threw the record across the room and told Me “don’t EVER play that shit in my house again!” Oddly enough I saw “Red” on his stack a couple of years later. In turns out a co-worker loaned it to him - it was his favorite record. I don’t think Dad ever listened to it but I did.

One day in 78 or 9 I saw stacks and stacks of “Red” 8-tracks on sale at “Pic & Save” so I’m sure it was deleted. Most things on sale at “Pic and Save” were.

I had a roommate who only listened to Zep & Crimson. Whenever he was home he was playing one or the other. This drove the girlfriends in the house crazy but it worked out well for me. I heard “red” everyday for at least three months and god damn did it grow on me.
