Stand Up/Benefit - a divide across the pond [and elsewhere]....?

I'm American and I love them pretty much equally. There was a time, though, when I was much younger, when Benefit was my favorite Tull album.

It might be worth noting that Benefit is the only Tull album aside from the Living In The Past comp where the US track line-up differed from its UK counterpart.

I love Oasis! You may we’ll be right, but even so, if push came to shove, I’d choose Morning Glory.

Two sensational albums, though.

Having given a good listen to both albums, I’m definitely going to come down in favour of Stand Up. Which isn’t to say Benefit isn’t a fine album, because it certainly is. I liked the heavier sound and as already been mentioned, Benefit is a precursor to Aqualung. Martin Barre absolutely shines on this album. As I said in an earlier post, I didn’t know there was an American version of the album and I think I prefer the look of that. Really good, Tull defining songs, although the best from this era might just be The Witches Promise.

But Stand Up is my favourite of these two and possibly my favourite of all their albums. Stand Up, is one of those albums that has been sprinkled in fairy dust. The songs, the playing and the flow, are just perfect. I think this is their Yes Album, their Selling England By The Pound: it’s that good. In terms of wonderful songs and flow, I’m reminded of In It For The Money By Supergrass, which just kicked ass big time. It’s great having Living In The Past as a bonus track, as it goes really well with the beauty of what’s gone before. In summary, Benefit is really good, but Stand Up is a masterpiece.

I'm with Charlie, Benefit was my first Tull album and was my favorite of the two for years but nowadays I like them equally. They are different but both great.

It's a bit of a dog's breakfast, style-wise, too with Mick being involved in four songs

Many consider the next one to be their finest work- it's certainly in my top 5

You know it's funny - Mick always maintained that Ian wasn't into the blues enough and that he (Mick) was unhappy with the direction the band was going in for the This Was sessions, yet I hear more than a little Tull (at least the Tull of This Was) in some of those Blodwyn Pig songs.

Why stop at Brick?

Well quite, personally I rate all them up to Stormwatch, but I'm speaking more as generally acknowledged, no question, no doubt classics. Not sure there is a consensus that Passion Play is up there with their best, tho it's always in the top 2 or 3 as far as I'm concerned.

As far as This Was, I do find it rather too bluesy ,its great of course but doesn't quite have the songs, yet.
