King Crimson - they made Red an awesome record, disbanded and came back a few years later with Discipline a different sound (yuck!)

Which band/artiste did a similar thing for you....?

I've never really heard any post-Red Crimson, yet others love it.

Is it really that bad?

I like it less than the stuff with Wetton or Lake singing but much more than Islands and Lizard. Or any of the other Crimson's that came after.

I don't have Islands or Lizard either. I keep thinking I'll get that massive Stephen Wilson box which contains those two albums plus a bunch of live shows, but as yet haven't got around to it.

As to the op, I was persuaded to buy a record by NY Gong, based on the greatness of real Gong, and I didn't like that at all.

Ditto Emerson and Palmer with 3, and TSOL in their metal era.

They are both well worth owning. I’m not into Crimson post Red myself.

I like Belew-Era Crimson! I think a lot of his tunes are throw aways but I think the best stuff on "Discipline" & "thrak" are very good indeed.
FRIPP seemed to go through a phase with that "interlocking" thing and very rarely wanted to let the hammer down on his guitar playing. I think Belew filled this role very nicely. I know it doesn't really seem like Crimson to some but FRIPP seems to think so to the extent that he performs some of those songs with the current KC lineup.

around "thrak" and "construktion" Fripp DID start letting the hammer down again and when the songs aren't nothings this can be very exciting to me.

I didn't realize how much I've grown accustomed to Belew in KC until he wasn't included. I think he wanted a bigger piece of the pie or he wasn't invited depending on who you talk to. Anyway, I think he deserves more than a bone just for the "Bob Welch Factor" of keeping the band a going concern.

Not to my taste. I have tried. I tried again with Discipline today - it sounded like Talking Heads which I am not keen on...

To my old ears they are both very robust. Seminal even

sorry my old school prog friend. You are too set in you 70's ways. Both the 70's Crimson and the 80's reboot were fantastic although quite different.
My only knock on 80's Crimson is there were a bunch of dud songs after Discipline( love all of discipline). Belew's vocals were never as good as Lake or Wetton but it was a different style and era and think it went well with the 80's sound. While it had pieces of the Talking Heads sound it was still Fripp and sounds very Fripp-like. Secondly, the addition of Levin added another dimension to KC. The band further evolved and changed in the 90's making a more powerful sound(2 guitarists, 2 drummers, 2 bass players). Now they have gone full circle bringing back Mel Collins and adding a singer who is more Lake/Wetton. Love the ever changing structure of KC its what makes them so amazing in my mind as they continue to evolve.

come on they keep evolving the same 70's song you don't like this?

as far as the current band they are finally doing versions of 70's classics (they didn't play 70's vocal songs with Belew). So happy to finally hear Epitaph , Cat Food, Moonchild, Cirkus, easy money and others. While I do miss Belew I understand the change and happy to see Mel Collins back...
the live show is a must see.

While not a band I felt Dylan did a few eras of interesting stuff after taking long periods off.

Never had any problems with Crimson after Red
but the only albums I really like is Discipline, Thrak and The Power To Believe.
(can´t listen to Beat and Three of a perfect pair)
The latest incarnation is very good live, seen them once, very powerful and nice to hear
some old tracks from before Discipline.
I lost respect for Adrian B when he went online and complain about him not being in the new
version of the band, and also wanted more money than the other players,
if he could return to the band, ffs get a grip man!

I kept waiting for the violin to come in

The new line-up with the three tub thumpers playing old 70s stuff is my compromise....! :D

In two words .... Fleetwood Mac.

Okay, they never really went away but I lost interest when they "lost" their bluesy format and Peter Green .. etc.

Right, but that's an unfair comparison, those three songs are on the 1971 Greatest Hits album.

(Yet another) slow day at Preludin, John?

And isn't it interesting how you can continue to come back here and scream and yell with your stupid all caps/gigantic font nonsense, yet you're terrified of me doing the exact same thing on your site? You'll ban someone before they even make a post because you're such a coward, yet enjoy that same behavior over here.

You really are a miserable excuse for a human being.

Now run back to your hole and write in your secret little hovel of hatred how you stirred things up today at BCB so your bitches can all back slap each other and call us cunts.
