Pretty sure it was the 'Artifacts II' box set of Beatles rarities.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

Pretty sure it was this one:

Early 80s, maybe? I sill have it somewhere, but it's not in the greatest shape. But a purchase I've never regretted, certainly.

It took me a long time to get into box sets. When I joined the BMG Music club, 1998 or so, they periodically had clearance sales on expensive box sets and u could get em for $4 to $8 a disc. Led Zeppelin was probably the very first. James brown star time, velvets peel slowly and see, Motown box, Sugar Hill,

Nope I remember now, a year or two before, I borrowed a Costco card and bought the Who Maximum R&B. That was a splurge, $50 or something.

Bought from JG Windows in Newcastle for something ridiculous like £10 as part of their Christmas sale sometime in the early 80’s.

Those are considered some of the best pressings, to this day,by some people.

I had the Tull 20th Anniversary set, very good it was too, but my first was almost certainly Mike Oldfield Boxed.

My first CD box sets were Pink Floyd Shine On and Led Zep's The Complete Studio Works. The Floyd set had poor packaging and a badly laid out glossy book full of errors (it even omits Meddle from the discography  ). The Zep set was nicely packaged and included lots of extras on Coda.

I can only remember ever buying two: I got a vinyl box set of Nick Drake around 1988 and somewhat later got the Nuggets CD box.

Like C, they usually seem like too much at once, and mostly stuff I won't be interested in.
I even hate extra tracks added to reissued/remastered albums.
Bugger off.

Mine too.
I still remember hearing the stripped down version of Venus in Furs and it changing almost completely my perception of how music is constructed.
