Aumm

Postby GoogaMooga » 22 Sep 2019, 09:00

When you play "This Whole World" by the Beach Boys, they go "Aumm-bop-diddit...", and I always think of the Buddhist mantra, "Aumm". Any connection there? Were the BB's getting all spiritual? Or is it just that it sounds good.

You of all people should know the answer to that. For anyone else, Mike Love's appearance in the Sunflower photos would provide a clue.

They were just copying the Beatles, as did many better bands than the previously doo-wop band, the Beach Boys. Their spiritual phase was as corny then as now.

Coincidentally, I just happened upon this bit.

The rock band that became Devil's Kitchen began in Carbondale in 1967 ... started a band they called *OM" ...

Driving west in a vintage VW Bus and arriving in San Francisco in June of 1968, band *OM" soon found there were three other Bay Area bands already tuned in to the same cosmic vibe and featuring names like Om, Aum, or Ohm. So "OM" decided to name themselves after Devil's Kitchen Lake.

BB's were spiritual. They had prayer sessions during the recording of Pet Sounds. They were the first to feature "God" in a song title. Mike Love is a lifelong practitioner of TM.

We are definitely entering - or deeply in - another era where meditation is cool again thanks to podcasters like Sam Harris who propose ways of making meditation easier with his ap and books. I heard a female comic on Marc Maron, I forget her name, a cousin in the Wayan clan who says now it is okay to meditate for just two minutes by counting backwards from 100. Woo woo or Woo woo!?

Billie Holiday might have something to say about that.
