Re: Tom Jones vs Englebert Humperdink
I have time for both (surprise, surprise), but clearly Tom Jones is the hit-maker here. Englebert Humperdinck had "Release Me", really the only hit I can name off the bat. Tom Jones is a belter, and can get tiresome in long stretches. He also did way too many covers, but I think Humperdinck might be the same there. Jones can get a bit tiresome in long stretches, but the Decca years are pretty solid.

Thinking about it now, for perhaps the first time, I’m surprised to find that I can’t think of even one EH song/record that I like even a little bit.
Whereas TJ has a bunch that I’m very fond of, and even still does good work now and again. His book (which includes some choice putdowns of EH, as it happens) is a not-bad read.

Re: Tom Jones vs Englebert Humperdink
Nothing to do with their music or personas (Jones for both), but I have never encountered fans as vociferous as those of Mr. Humperdinck, whose ire beats that of Deadheads when they're confronted with as much as a discouraging word about the object of their affection. Compounding that, Enge's fans are little old ladies, not stoners, so harder to escape by foot.
The word "smarmy" was coined to describe Englebert Humperdinck's stage presence, and in my experience he manages to keep any hint of wit well hidden. I'm especially fond of Jones in recent years, when he seems to pay no attention to commerce and records just what he finds interesting.
Tones told me that his only record with Jimmy Page on guitar was his first single, "Chills and Fever."

I can't even think of one EH song at all.
Wait, I remember this one kid at school miming Please Release Me (that's him, right?) when we were 10 years old or so, and it was a pretty funny send-up.
That's all I got.

Re: Tom Jones vs Englebert Humperdink
Englebert Humperdinck Kept The Beatles (Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields) off the number one spot in the UK for the first time since Please Please Me.
Tom Jones never did that.
